I've found another perk of not collecting 2012 Topps. No cards with squirrels!
While I was off driving hours through the snow last night (why? well, for my job, of course), the blogs and those things I don't pay attention to (re: forums/Beckett) were flipping out about 2012 Topps and squirrel cards.
It was enough to make me stop at Walmart at 3:15 a.m. on the way home to see if there was any 2012 Squirrel to sample. But there wasn't, and I made it home alive and without a squirrel post. I was never so relieved on both fronts.
Of course, the best part of partially ignoring this year's cards is focusing on all of those past collecting goals that collected dust while I collected cards that I didn't even want in my collection. (That's what new cards are good for -- sweeping under the rug all those sets that you haven't finished).
One of those goals was finishing off the 2009 Upper Deck O-Pee-Chee set.
For those who weren't collecting in 2009, OPC was a strange set. It appealed to traditional set collectors because it is a 600-card set on traditional cardboard stock with an old-school design and a mix of portrait photos and action shots that reminded people of collecting in the '70s or early '80s.
But it was a bit quirky, too, with some strange photos and oddball decisions that made me both love it and ostracize it. I went from criticizing it (P.S.: I still hate studio shots), to ripping it, to ridiculing it, to declaring my undying love for it and my final declaration to collect the whole darn goofy thing.
And I did.
The final three cards that I needed for the set arrived in the mail over the last few days.
The Cardboard Don supplied Justin No I'm Not Going to Pronounce It, along with several other fine cards that you'll see another time.
GCA supplied the other two cards. A much-loathed studio shot and a guy who did very little for the Dodgers last year.
And with that, '09 OPC is the 24th base set I've completed (I am excluding teams sets and insert sets). In fact, I've already added OPC to the "sets I've completed" list that I wrote up last June. Yup, I haven't finished off a set in that long -- longer in fact.
However, there are a few sets on the horizon that I expect to finish off in the next month or few months. So, look for those.
But before you do that, look at this:
All 600 cards.
I did this because I like to share.
And because I'm the Mad Scanner.
Anyway, a big, big thanks to anyone who sent me a card for the completion of this set.
You may now return to your regularly scheduled squirrel programming.

One day... no rush, right?
You were the first blogger I knew that had to pay extra for all his scans. I'm guessing you are going to be the first one that has to pay for an advanced package as well.
Now you can start on the blacks too! :)
