The neglected decade

When it come to cards, I have many shopping lists. There is the large one on my blog, otherwise known as a "want list." There are the various carts of cards stored on COMC or other websites. There is the watch list on ebay. And there are the variety of handwritten notes stored here and there in preparation for card shows or online binges. All of these lists reflect my priorities in collecting. Just in case you didn't know, I'll mention a few of them off the top of my head: 1975 Topps minis, 1972 Topps, oddball cards from the 1970s, 1950s and '60s cards, early '80s Fleer and Donruss, and a whole bunch of present-day parallels. That's just the highlights. There are a number of other interests, too. All written down or typed into cyberspace. And then after that -- after all THAT -- comes ... the '90s. Honestly, there are no 1990s cards on my immediate shopping lists, unless it's a semi-big-ticket item like the 1992 Fleer Update Mike Piazz...

Interesting to me

I wasn't going to do a breakdown of the game I went to last night. Everyone reading this has been to a baseball game before -- multiple times -- including myself. But, no matter how many times I go, I always find something interesting -- usually something I've never seen before -- and that was the case again Friday night. So here is a top 10 on what was Interesting To Me at last night's Norfolk Tides-Syracuse Chiefs baseball game: 10. Jamie Hoffmann: Hoffmann was one of two former Dodgers to play in last night's game. You'll read about the other one later. Hoffmann had some enjoyable moments for the Dodgers in 2009, but now he's kicking around on the Orioles' Triple A team. He started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a triple. My daughter only knows him as "The Former Dodger." 9. Pink batters boxes: It was Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs wore uniforms with pink accents on the jersey. Some of...

55

One of my stupid "you can't keep everything" moments was when I slipped all of my 45s* out of their protective sleeves, stacked them in a box for easy storage, and chucked all the sleeves . Those sleeves were ART. I threw out ART. I hate it when I'm in Throw Away Mode. Anyway, one of my most favorite record sleeves was for Sammy Hagar's song "I Can't Drive 55." You see the image of it here. It's so simplistic. So direct. So in your face. I love it. It also amuses me that the song came about after Hagar was stopped going 62 miles an hour on a north country road headed to Lake Placid. I'm somewhat familiar with the state troopers in the north country. Of course, now the speed limit is 65 in New York state and the song is hopelessly out-of-date. But the sentiment of the song still works, and for my purposes with Dodger uniform numbers, it works, too. I think. I associate the No. 55 with a single Dodger. Orel Hershiser. He's a ...
