For shame, American card collector, for shame

I have been having some trouble acquiring your basic variety 2012 Topps base Dodgers. Why, here it is, late August, and I was still missing the majority of the Dodgers from Series 2! And I run a respectable blog! I was starting to feel ashamed. But then I received a package. Among other cards, these three popped out ... "So what?" you're saying. "Those are just three base cards from Series 2. I have like 50 of each card." Exactly. You have 50 of each card. You couldn't have sent one of them to me? How long has Series 2 been out -- three months? I'm waiting this long to get a base card of Clayton Kershaw, my favorite player? You know who ended up sending me these cards? John ... from England. Yup, that John . That's right, a guy from ENGLAND was able to send me basic Dodger needs from Series 2. And he doesn't even live on the side of England that's closest to the United States! He practically lives in Belgium...

At a sticking point

Recently, I embarked on an orgy of sticker-sticking within the friendly confines of the only sticker book that matters, the 1982 Topps sticker album. The book was provided for me by Jake Plumstead from The Pursuit of 80sness / Red Sox, and it immediately unleashed the memories of collecting stickers in '82 on the sly, because, you know, stickers were pretty much for babies. But I've long since stopped caring about other people's perceptions in a variety of areas, so I immediately started sticking stickers with abandon, even within the sight of other people in the house. I knew I didn't have enough stickers to fill the thing, but I didn't care. There were enough of them that I knew I'd have stickers stuck with every turn of the page. That was pretty good. It turns out I had enough stickers to fill two of the pages completely. Three years removed from "We Are Family," every one of the '82 Pirates stickers are stuck. I apologize for the...

Stuck in the past

A few collectors are running up and down the aisles squealing because Topps has released a sticker set and accompanying sticker album that you can purchase in retail stores right now. I'm not going to get that excited. I mean I'm a grown adult now. I have been for sometime. It's bad enough that I open packages with pictures of players who are 20 years younger than me. I'm not going to collect their stickers, too. And then stick them in a book like I'm some fawning, gooey-eyed 10-year-old girl. There are times when you have to put aside childish things and realize that certain pursuits are for children and certain pursuits are for adults. It's a matter of maturity and being comfortable as an ... Wait ... ... ... What's this? The Topps Sticker Album from 1982 ? Direct from Jack Plumstead in England? Well, this is a whole other story. This happens to be the first sticker album that I ever encountered. I was in high school by this time, so ev...

Cheers ... literally ... from the U.K.

I was feeling a little down after a post I read here . I haven't really noticed a decline in posting across the blogobingo. In fact, I still can't keep up with all the new card blogs. But the post did remind me that I have noticed a general decline in readers. Most concerning, for me, is the lack of /major decline in activity on some of the blogs that were most prominent during that fall of 2008 when I first discovered the wonderful concoction of blogs and cards. I miss those guys. I wish they would come back. The realistic side of me knows that life intrudes or interests change, and that there are plenty of other blogs out there that have filled in the gaps. But the nostalgic part of me, which is growing larger by the day, wants it to be 24 months ago when everything was new and exciting and damn interesting. So, I was wallowing in that pathetic, sickening puddle of self-pity this afternoon when I noticed a package jutting from the mailbox. After tending to my usual mun...

All in good time

I am seriously falling behind in my posting. I have a lot to say, but I just can't seem to fit it in. Between work and home life, bippings and lawsuit settlements, I'm struggling to keep up. For instance, I haven't jumped into the Upper Deck/MLB lawsuit settlement fray like many others have. I have my opinion, and I think I'll address it in a roundabout way soon. But when will "soon" be? I have no idea. I'm overdue to add another badass to the "I'm Badass and You're Not" Club. I mean they're going to start hiking membership dues at the club if I don't find a few badasses quick. I've also been meaning to post another Brush With Greatness segment and write about another one of my 100 favorite ballplayers. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have started spring training and I haven't said a damn thing. Some fan I am. But the most visible sign of backlog is the stacks of wax that I've received over the last couple of weeks. T...
