Not that there's anything wrong with this

Twenty-five years ago this Saturday, a well-known stand-up comedian debuted a little-known sitcom during the 4th of July holiday week. It would be nearly a year before another episode appeared and probably a good two years before "Seinfeld" took hold with the American public. But I can safely say that I have never seen or probably ever will see a funnier television show. "Seinfeld" is the sitcom of my era. The generation before me had "All in the Family." The generation after me had god knows what -- do they make sitcoms anymore? I remember watching one of the earliest Seinfelds sometime during 1990 in my co-worker's apartment, thinking "what is this?" I believe it was the one where Kramer fills the washing machine with cement. Sometime after that, I was a faithful Thursday night watcher, like the rest of TV viewers. When the show hit syndication, I copied them on to videotape because I knew that a show this historically funny sh...

Baseball cards on the 5s

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about matching up Topps sets according to the last digit of the year in which they were produced -- 1952, 1962, 1972, etc. While acknowledging that the "3s" probably have the edge on the other digits, my favorite number has always been the "5s." For me, 1965, 1975 and 1985 all hold personal meaning. The year I was born, the first year I collected cards, and the topic of one of my set blogs. Plus, the '65 and '75 sets are icons in the hobby, full of wonderful cardboard moments. And, yeah, '75 is my favorite set of all-time. But two other sets that have always intrigued me are the 1995 and 2005 Topps sets. I didn't collect much of either. Each year was a bookend in my collecting dark period. I have only a smattering of both. But I always liked the look of '95 and '05 has grown on me by each passing year. Not long ago, Bo of Baseball Cards Come To Life! came upon one of his massive-lot finds tha...

My least favorite Yankees

I am almost certain that the Yankees are going to win the World Series. I've been certain for quite awhile. During this postseason, I have always rooted for the other team, and felt real disgust when they didn't succeed, or -- like the Angels -- make dumb mistake after dumb mistake. But I always knew that the Yankees would prevail. I'm not the greatest evaluator of talent, but I can see what the Yankees have and how they are playing. I don't think the Phillies have a real shot of winning the Series. It could go six games. But I don't see a seven-game series or a Phillies win. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE a Phillies win and I would love to be wrong, but my gut says it ain't gonna happen. Given that, what I'm saying here shouldn't annoy any Yankees fans, too much. Your team is going to win the World Series, so who cares about what some blogger thinks? It's well-established that I do not like the Yankees. I come from a family of Yankee...
