An embarrassment of riches

Before I wrote this, I was caught between wanting to celebrate my team's World Series championship and thinking maybe I'll shut up about it because people don't want to hear it.   I know I shouldn't worry about that -- who cares what those people think, my team just won two World Series in a row for the first time since I became a fan 50 years ago! But I was raised not to boast and if people are mad about the thing I want to boast about maybe it's not worth boasting about anyway.   Still, I didn't come up with the current MLB climate of haves and have-nots. I picked my team a long time ago, before free agency was a way of life. The only super-team I knew then were the Yankees. There are several super-teams now (look up MLB payrolls, the Dodgers aren't even first). The Dodgers get a lot of hate, warranted or not. But I can't let that spoil my celebration of TWO WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ROW.   I'm not accustomed to this, obviously. I've watc...

Not scary at all

So it's the wee hours of the morning in the hazy afterglow of celebrating the Dodgers' World Series title over -- can you believe it? -- the Yankees. It was a quiet celebration. Just my wife, who was rousted out of bed by a text from my daughter that basically said "GET UP, THE DODGERS ARE DOING SOMETHING!", and me, who raced home from work to see the on-field celebration. Prior to that, I was in my office, sweating through the final innings. I wasn't that busy, so I had plenty of time to check for updates. I tell you, for a five-game World Series, that was a little too much drama. In the eighth inning, I couldn't take it anymore and walked out to talk to a co-worker who couldn't care less about the game. I wanted her to take my mind off of it, and she did, talking about high school soccer playoffs, of all things (usually that would put me right to sleep but I needed anything off-topic to distract me).   But then I heard the game calling me and I went ...

The Dodgers, you guys

It's been a surreal 24 hours. As a member of a baseball fan base who hadn't experienced an ultimate championship in over 30 years -- Mets, Orioles, Tigers, Pirates, Indians, Brewers fans, we are one -- I was somewhat at a loss over how to react to the Dodgers winning the World Series. What do I do? All of this attention on me for something I didn't do! ... I feel weird. ... I don't know what to do with my hands! Part of this is because I was working when the game was playing. So while I was fully aware of the game -- it is my job responsibility to know what's happening in sports -- I couldn't do all the things I'd do if I was following the game from my living room.   Also, you need to know the job I have to understand the emotional conflict. Not only is the job of an editor/reporter built on objectivity, but it demands your undivided attention. I must be concentrating while I'm working because if I don't, errors will happen and deadlines won't ...
