Night Owl Cards

It's another weekend of pulling together some loose ends here on the blog. After all, it's not like I have any Topps Series II to feature. I'll start with what I do have. Some of that ghoulish Upper Deck Goudey . And I'll begin by saying something nice: I still like the "heads-up" cards, like the Griffey Jr. here. I know some people are tired of them. I think it's just about the only thing redeeming in the entire set. Because without them you just have cards like this. Yikes. Look at LeBlanc's spooky right eye. I've never heard of this guy, which makes this card even spookier. Maybe it's some demon figure disguising himself as a baseball card with a made-up name in order to hypnotize every collector into joining his underworld army of the damned. Should this set be called ... ... the "Lichtenstein set" ... ... or the "dot matrix set"? Out of the comments entered here , those are my two favorite definitions. Both are very appropriate, I think. The first is a tribute to famed pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, whose use of dots of different color, size and spacing (called Ben-day dots ), produced iconic paintings like "Girl With Hair Ribbon" above. Comic book fans would be very familiar with Lichtenstein's work, and as we well know, there are a few comic book fans in the baseball card collecting community. The second, "the dot matrix" set, works very well, too. Some of you may have cursed your old dot matrix printer, but dot matrix reminds me of LED displays, especially old-style scoreboards that you'd see at ballparks.
