The contest I forgot I won

We are all much busier than we should be. I'm not sure how we got so overwhelmed and frazzled. I have a sneaking suspicion it's because of everyone's obsession with getting bigger and better. I like to think that even though I have been caught up in this endless loop of  "do more ," thanks to the world in which I live, that I do not feel that compulsion myself. But then there is the collection, and I wonder. I admit, I like to see it get bigger and better. Yet, how can you grow that collection when you don't have the time to devote to it? How can it get bigger when you don't even remember when you win a contest? I received a stack of cards in the mail from Tim of I Love the Smell of Cardboard in the Morning . He sent a note with it saying that these cards were winnings from his contest and apologized for taking so long to send out the cards. He said the contest was held a year-and-a-half ago. "OK," I thought. "I don't remember...

Moving on to cards that I like

Not every 2016 Topps card is brutal -- I just discovered a couple of night shots in the Perspectives insert set that I simply must have -- but I'm pretty much done sampling it. Just the Dodgers for me, thanks. Plus, when the current set comes out and you don't like it, it's a blessing. Because you can focus on cards that you really like. I've already been doing that -- you'll see some of what I picked up soon -- but I also need to show off Night Owl-collection-centric cards sent to me by fellow collectors. Today, you will see a bunch of goodies from Tim B., of I Love the Smell of Cardboard in the Morning. Coincidentally, his blog is where I saw the Perspectives night cards. So I must repay him with a post. Speaking of smelling cardboard, Tim really sniffed out my want list for these cards.  Let's see what he found extra stinky: Zack Greinke, doing a little traitor-foreshadowing by appearing framed in Diamondback red. This brings my 2013 Dodger T...

Morning vs. night

There isn't a thing about the morning that I prefer over the night. My job and my personality dictate that I rarely wake up before 10 a.m. or hit the sack before 3 a.m. I prefer it that way. The morning to me is loud, abrasive, and much too bright. Alarm clocks are a horrible invention. The thought of an egg sandwich from a McDonald's drive-thru makes me nauseous. To me, coffee-drinking borders on cult-like behavior. And grim-faced 7 a.m. drivers appear all too willing to run you down. Morning TV news shows seem like a plot by a futuristic government: pummel these civilians with stories of death and human twistedness so that they're too demoralized to demand anything. I don't even like the sun shining from the east. The angle is all wrong. If I am up before 10 a.m., it's usually because of an illness, an automobile issue or another Very Adult Problem. Can we pleeeeease just dim the lights and all go to sleep 'til noon? Night, on the other hand, is w...
