One odd package

A couple of weeks ago I found some spare money that was just enough to order a few inexpensive cards off of my favorite baseball card marketplace. It wasn't until I received the package in the mail a few days ago that I realized how many of the cards that I ordered were oddballs. I've always gravitated toward oddballs, but my main missions in collecting usually involve completing major sets. This package appears to signal some shift in my thinking. I did order some mainstream cards, but they were by far the least interesting to me. Instead I found much more appeal in stuff like the 1976 SSPC Gene Hiser above. Remember when the Dodgers were good?

Hello, everyone. It's Night Owl. This incredible likeness of me, featured on my favorite card design, was created by Doc T of Baseball Card Recollections . Whoooo-boy, what a great card! It will be taking a spot on the sidebar soon, as all great works of art must. But first, I'd like you to harken back, back to the days when the Dodgers were good. Remember those days? But what I am starting to forget is true Dodger greatness. World Series greatness. Championship greatness. Hell, I was still in college in 1988. You know what happened in 1988, right? The right team won. Won it all. Ever since then it's been the wrong team. There have been the usual suspects. And then there have been the Diamondbacks and the Angels and the Marlins (twice). That really makes a proud Dodger fan weary. So I tho...

Cardboard appreciation: 1954 Topps Junior Gilliam

(My favorite month of the year is two days away. Weeeeeee! Time for Cardboard Appreciation. This is the 70th in a series): I love baseball! The Dodgers beat the Giants! Joe Torre didn't screw up the game! Interleague play is over! I love baseball! The All-Star Game is next month! I get to see a game in person next month! I'll get something baseball-y for my birthday next month! I love baseball! My box of 2010 Allen & Ginter is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday! I am scheduled to turn my Strasburg refractor winnings into vintage goodness on Wednesday! I love baseball! I have two days off! There's a full slate of games on the tube! There's beer in the fridge! And the Don himself sent me this 1954 Topps card of Junior "1953 N.L. Rookie of the Year" Gilliam! Did I mention that I love baseball? It should be like the national pastime or something.
