Doing the exact opposite of what a card blogger should be doing

I've been out of town the last few days as it was my folks' 50th wedding anniversary over the weekend, and in the process, I neglected just about every aspect of being a respectable card blogger and sports fan. Let's relive, shall we?: 1. I was in Buffalo on a Sunday in the fall and did not do what was required. Anyone who finds themselves in this situation -- sports fan or no -- must watch the Bills. It is imperative if you are to stay in the city. I watched on TV for a little bit, saw them fall behind, then got distracted by the lake effect rain outside (yes, lake effect RAIN, I said I was in Buffalo) and left the game so I could travel out of a lake-enhanced monsoon. Punishment? The Bills came back and won while I was in bat-out-of-hell mode. 2. I missed a card show. Yes, one of the four card shows that I get to go to -- I missed it. This card show used to be at the end of every October. Three years ago or so, they moved it to the beginning, and it's been

One of a kind

I've come to terms with the fact that Clayton Kershaw very well could be the best pitcher that I have seen in my lifetime. Yeah, I know, you have issues with that statement. Maybe you're a Felix Hernandez or Matt Harvey or Max Scherzer fan. Sorry, Clayton's better. Maybe you know how old I am and that in my time following baseball, I have seen Steve Carlton, Greg Maddux, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Pedro Martinez, Roy Halladay, Randy Johnson, Jim Palmer and Roger Clemens. But I think Clayton will surpass all of them in one way or another if he continues like he has. Maybe you're questioning my use of the phrase "come to terms" -- aren't I a Dodger fan? Yes, of course I am. But the more unfair Kershaw gets, the more people will want to collect his cards. And I can't compete with that. As noted before , I now have 300 cards of Kershaw. I want more. But look at these numbers: -- He leads the major leagues in strikeouts (182), E

Better shoppers than I

All of my Christmas shopping is done. Even more impressively, all of my Christmas wrapping is done. The latter is a four-hour marathon of incompetence, so to actually rid myself of that whole embarrassment is something to celebrate. But I'm not as impressive as some of you people out there. You know who you are. The ones who send me cards that arrive immediately before the holiday, as if they're Christmas gifts or something. Some of you even write festive things on the notes with the package, like "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays." You're all so on top of everything. Meanwhile, I've halted card shipping because of a Pre-Christmas Post Office Phobia. There won't be any "Merry Christmas, You Wonderful Blogger" notes from me because I can't get out from under the holiday. But please note that I think you're all terrific. And, much, much, much better shoppers than I. So let's see what arrived amid all the ribbons
