Destined for display

It's been almost two years since I updated the wall hanging in my card room. It's the one that displays 16 cards of my choosing. The first two editions of the wall hanging have been pretty random, basically cards of the past that have some sort of meaning to me. And since cards touch a wide range of moments in my life, that is covering a lot of territory. To be honest, I haven't been happy with that arrangement. I thought I was . But with each time I entered the card room, I grew more and more tired with the cards on display. I just didn't feel a connection. It was much too random, I don't collect in a random nature. I need at least a little bit of order. So, today, I did something about it. It occurred to me that there is a group of cards that I possess that would be perfect to display on a wall. And, no, they're not shiny, they aren't expensive, they weren't scribbled on by players, but they mean more to me than any of that. Of course, I...

Suitable for framing

I was finally able to take a moment and determine which cards I would use to replace the cards that are in this wall hanging. That is important for you -- well, for those of you who entered the contest -- because finding suitable replacements was what was holding me up from announcing a contest winner. I scrambled around and found 16 cards that reflect my card tastes or were topics of blog posts over the last three or four years. It wasn't easy. I don't seem to have as much dupe material as I did several years ago -- or, quality dupe material anyway. I have all the 2011 Topps you could ever want. So I'm not quite as happy with this round of cards as I was the last round. But let's see who is going in the frame (yeah, that's what I said. You think I was going to announce the contest winner right away? Use the scroll thingy if you're that impatient): 1983 Fleer Mike Fischlin: OK, I don't think I've ever devoted a post to 1983 Fleer. And ce...

Another winner ... and another contest

I've landed in the middle of another busy work period. I thought I'd be able to send out even more of those 2013 Opening Day cards at the end of this week, but it looks like that won't happen. Maybe it will ... we'll see how sick I get of the man. I don't like it when this happens. Just once I'd like to have the right side of my desk (the "outgoing packages" section) clear of cards. I always dream of a happy little scenario where I magically send out surprise packages to unsuspecting collectors, like that guy who drops a $1,000 out his window. "What time is it? Oh HO! Time to package some cards for random collector! He'll have no idea!!!!" Some day. But meanwhile, I should get to the contest that I announced last week before my job eats that, too. I was giving away some random items -- '70s cards, oddballs, a few key items from the last couple of years, too -- to say thanks for waiting as I slowly send out packages. The key...
