The workload is something fierce these days, but I'm squeezing in another post because I like you.
I received a PWE from reader Chris the other day. He roots for the Braves, big surprise. (Next time you hear about how many Dodgers bloggers and readers there are, take a quick count of the Braves bloggers/readers and be amazed. I'm willing to bet there are more. I can count six off the top of my head).
Chris sent a handful of cards. I'll spare you the duplicates. Here is what I needed:
I've been getting a good amount of O-Pee-Chee lately, which is a fantastic development. The next time you come across Steve Yeager's 1985 Topps card, look up his 1986 Topps card, too. Topps obviously didn't throw away the film.
1997 Fleer E-X 2000 stands out amid so much late 1990s awful. Awkward brand name aside, you can't go wrong with an acetate cloud display.
We're still in the Fleer Skybox realm, with one of the most awkward sets of all-time, 1999 Thunder. I'll skip the ear-wrenching text that is on the back of every card in this set except to say that the first word is "Whatchya."
All right, I have this card already. But you can never show a player photo of former Indians and Phillies manager Charlie Manuel too many times. Especially a photo of him as a Dodger, where he spent 19 whole games. And you thought Chuck always had a paunch.
OK, final card. It's a delight.
I give Pacific a hard time for some of its card sets, a few of them the ugliest I've ever come across. But that doesn't mean I don't like garish, over-the-top designs (exhibit A: my love of 1975 Topps). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
This card works in blazing fashion. It's from an insert in the 1996 Pacific Prisms set, which is pretty flashy, but not appallingly so. The insert set is called, obviously, Flame Throwers.
1996 was the year of Flaming Baseball Cards. Topps Laser put flaming baseball cards IN ITS BASE SET that year. So Pacific didn't have the market cornered on this.
But this is still me liking a Pacific card, and that's not easy for me to do.
Now just let me get it into this binder page without dinging everything up ...
