The most Hall of Famers, update 13

 

Traditionally, the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony is around this time. But that's not going to happen until September this year.

 

So I figured I'd throw a bone to those looking to get their Hall of Fame fix by writing another update to my Most Hall of Famers series.

I want to start wrapping this series up. Not only is it stretching a bit long for even me, but there has been at least one other Twitter baseball card fan doing a similar HOF card series and doing it a lot quicker, too. I need to pick up the pace -- because there are always people wondering how many Hall of Famers are in this set or that set.

So today I'm going to finish off all the 1960s Topps sets and count the Hall of Famers there. I'm also going to correct some of my mistakes per usual. For example, I will be adding one more HOF card for the 1969 set because I am embarrassed to say I had no idea Al Lopez had a card in the '69 set until very recently. It's amazing what passes under your nose without you noticing for so many years.

Probably even more dubious -- criminal in fact -- is me leaving out Mike Schmidt in the 1973 Hall of Fame count. Goodness, where are my manners? But I've said many times that this is not an easy exercise. (It's been made easier though by Trading Card Database).

So, there you are, all the '60s are finished. They range from a low of 36 in 1960 to a high of 48 at the end of the decade in 1969.

 

Even with the addition of Al Lopez to the '69 list of Hall of Famers, 1969 Topps remains in third place behind 1983 and 1984 so far. Here is that updated list of the top sets in terms of total Hall of Famers:

With the exception of 1969, the '60s gets shut out of the Top 10 completely. I'm not sure why that is, I wasn't around to watch baseball in the '60s, but sometimes I think players like Elston Howard and Ken Boyer, and of course Gil Hodges, have been overlooked more than any other recent period for baseball.

 

The early '60s sets like 1961 and 1962 actually feature more Hall of Famers than what I listed. 1961 in particular is filled with subsets that contain Hall of Famers but they are either repeats of players already in the set or HOFers that played much earlier than in 1961. I discount those. 

I also feel the need to set the record straight here because when conversing about this topic on Twitter, I said some things in error (Twitter seems to be the place for that). I do, in fact, count the playing cards of people who went into the Hall as managers and, vise versa, I count the manager cards of people who went into the Hall as players. Those four-person coach cards from 1960? The jury is still out on that.

 

The more sets I add, the longer it takes to complete one of these posts (Blogger isn't too happy about them either). So I'm going to pick up the pace of these a bit in an attempt to wrap them up. The next post will be in September when the Hall inducts the 2020 class. I'll update some of the sets that include Jeter, Walker and Simmons. After that I'm aiming for a post in October in which I clear out the '70s and/or the '80s.

As usual, I hope you enjoy this series. I know this stuff is available for those who want to look it up, but I like the suspense of it. I think it'll be nice to come up with the answer myself and have it all in once place.
