Mama likes football

Ever since my mother passed away on Mother's Day four years ago, the holiday has become a bittersweet one.

That, combined with little night owl flying the nest around the same time, makes Mother's Day much more low-key around here. It's simpler. No calls home. No trips. No reservations most times (neither the wife or me can stand crowds). Thank goodness the wife is such a cutey, or who knows if I could get inspired anymore.

The empty nest has changed things, too. Mrs. Night Owl is more into sports than she ever was during our first 30 years together. She's gotten into baseball a little bit, enjoying the game broadcasts, even if only as background noise. But when the Dodgers on, she will pay attention.

Really though, she likes football. She's a Buffalo girl. The Bills are her team and, unlike me who puts football out of my mind during the offseason, she's looking around for any football tidbit she can find. Like what movies Josh Allen is watching and that kind of stuff.

I can't get into the celebrity sports scene, but it seems like I at least should be posting about football a little on this day.

I received two different envelopes of 1979 Topps football in separate Trading Card Database trades. Weirdly, both of the offers came immediately -- like the next day -- after picking up that entire binder of 1979 football at the card show. It was like those times when you search for something online and immediately that same thing pops up in advertising on your social sites. Maybe my binder purchase tipped off TCDB -- hey, he likes '79 football, send him a proposal!

The first trade was with Mccammon44, it was my second trade with him, another TCDB first!

Six more cards off the want list. As I mentioned on my card show post, all of the team cards in the binder were marked up so it's nice to get a couple of clean specimens as replacements. And I do mean clean -- look at those airbrushed Cardinals helmets, not a spot on them!

The other trade was with mvs0219. I sent him a bunch of 1975 Topps baseball extras, I really love having those available to send out. I need to get more.

A couple of these I had already obtained with the binder buy. But that's what happens when you're suddenly getting a bunch of cards from the same set, all from different sources all at once. You lose track of what you have.

You'll notice a fair amount of Vikings and Giants. Both of those teams were absent from the binder, so I needed several of those.

The leaders card at the top of the post also came in the second trade. The scoring leaders in football always confused me as a kid: What? Kickers mixed in with running back and receivers? I could not crack the numerical code.

The two trades brought me to 460 cards total from the 528-card set. I've gained on this set very quickly, but it will start to slow down now that there are a number of superstars remaining.

I haven't made a TCDB transaction since these two. Part of that is because I need to list more cards for sale/trade, I've been slow on that part. The main reason, though, is I still haven't put out a proposal myself -- it just seems like so much work.

So I'll work on that. But not right now. I need to cook for mama.

I no longer follow football but I do remember it being notable whenever a non-kicker lead the league in scoring.

Nite owl,
Love the 79 topps FB set. Interesting time when topps did not have the right to publish cards with team logos, but rams helmet for corral as well Haden (and maybe more) had the rams horns. Topps started showing logos again in 1982. 1970s was the era of spraypainted helmets indeed.

As for the Bills, my wife and I got married in June 1993 and made the loop from Michigan around the eastern great lakes all the way to Montreal. We did stay a few days in Buffalo where it was ghastly hot (Maid of the Mist boat tour cooled us off thankfully). Remember going to a chi chis where I told the waitress we'd gladly take three super bowl losses as lions fans, since my team has never even been to a SB. The bills would make it 4 losses the following winter.

Thankfully, my wife has loved baseball since we started dating. Saw Cecil Fielder hit a HR over the roof in tigers stadium off Dave Stewart in 1990 with her. And we went to a game in Cleveland and three in Montreal plus a day in Cooperstown. It's great having a gal who loves baseball!

The '79 FB set is a classic. I collected a ton of it when I was young and love that set.

Cool thing about the 1979 design is that it is a rework of 1973 Topps Football design

Great, heartfelt post, Mr. Owl. I remember 1979 Topps football well. Everyone in my neighborhood wanted Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach.

I haven't sent any offers on the TCDB for at least six months, so I don't know if anything has changed in that time, but I was always amazed, and somewhat dismayed, by how long it took to compile an offer.
