The most Hall of Famers, update 12

 

The last time I wrote a "Most Hall of Famers" post, I said I'd try add to another update fairly soon, which is what I'm doing now.

After thinking about it, maybe I should have waited until next year when the new Hall class is announced. But I can just do another update when that happens! You LOVE these most Hall of Famers updates, right???

Well, I do anyway. ... Sort of. ... It's a bit of a pain, tallying and adding all the images and counts from the previous update post.

But I was eager to get to this because instead of using a filched image of Yogi Berra's 1956 Topps card, as I've been doing since I started this HOF count, I can use my very own Berra '56 card!

For this round of updates, I'm tackling the 1965, 1967 and 1984 Topps sets. I wanted to add more '60s sets to the list and I was super-curious about where the 1984 set would rank.

The set that immediately preceded it, the 1983 set, holds the crown with the most Hall of Famers right now. And, the 1984 set created a sneaky little trick of a card, seen above, when it showcased three retired players -- who ordinarily wouldn't get their own card in that set -- on a single card. That's three additional Hall of Famers for 1984!

Will it unseat 1983?

As you saw, the 1984 set did not surpass the 1983 set, falling a single Hall of Famer short. (You eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that 1983's total has decreased by one since the last HOF post. That's because I miscounted -- I'm telling you this exercise is a bear).

The 1983 and 1984 sets match up completely except for Earl Weaver, who retired at the end of the 1982 season, therefore no 1984 card.

The 1965 and 1967 sets have respectable totals, but they're pretty average. Neither one makes the top 10 highest so far. The 1984 set slips into the second spot behind 1983.

OK, the next update will be after the 2021 class is announced at the end of January. Then I'll choose a few sets to update that include the latest Hall of Famers. Maybe I'll throw in a set from the '50s, too, as I haven't done one of those in awhile.

 

And, yes, I know Trading Card Database has all of this listed already. I consult TCDB when compiling these updates. But it includes in its totals repeat appearances by Hall of Famers, such as on league leader cards, and I don't think that's an accurate count. Also it adds Hall of Famers from other sports, like Dave DeBusschere, and we're talking baseball here.

 

Also, it's worth pointing out that Dick Allen likely would've been included in this latest update because the veterans vote was supposed to occur in December until the pandemic scrapped it.

 

This is why someone smart said never put off til tomorrow what you can do today.
