The most Hall of Famers, update 11

I've been neglecting finishing off adding the 2020 Hall of Fame class to my in-progress list of the sets with the Most Hall of Famers.

I have an excuse. Out of mind out of sight. There was no induction ceremony last month to remind me. I took care of Ted Simmons' addition back in December just because I was so gosh darn excited for one of my childhood favorites. But I feel a bit sorry for making Larry Walker wait. Derek Jeter? I'm half surprised ESPN didn't find a way to railroad an induction ceremony through for a chance to trumpet their golden boy one more time.

But, anyway, I need to update this series with the entire 2020 Hall of Fame class (unfortunately, Marvin Miller is not in any of the Topps flagship sets).

To update with Walker and Jeter, I'll need to add a couple of more recent sets to the project. That means we're not going to be changing the overall Most Hall of Famers leaders because recent sets haven't had the chance to accumulate that many HoFers.

For this segment I am adding the 1998 and 2005 Topps sets.

I'm adding 2005 Topps because I just received a stash of 2005 Topps from Scott, although there were no Hall of Famers in that stack. I'm adding 1998 Topps for no real reason, but I do get a chance to address this card:

While I like this card and always have since I pulled it in one of the few packs of cards I bought in 1998, I am not including it in the list.

Adding retired players to the base set is one of the weird things Topps started doing during the period when I was hardly collecting. But my project here is to figure out the period when the most Hall of Famers were performing on the fields and on our TVs. Obviously, Roberto Clemente was not playing in 1998.

OK, a few notes before I get out of here.

1. The addition of Jeter and Walker did not threaten the Hall of Fame leaders, but the early '90s sets are now covering ground. The 1992 and 1993 sets could really be a factor if players like Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds get voted in over the next couple of years. Same with Curt Schilling and Omar Vizquel.

2. I've started using Trading Card Database as a resource for finding Hall of Famers in each set. Even though it doesn't compile names like I do (I'm not including league leader cards or separate All-Star cards), I can easily filter those out and it's helpful overall. But I've already found some weirdness. Deion Sanders is not a baseball Hall of Famer.

3.  I will always go at my own pace with this exercise, adding two, three, four sets at a time. The topic on the set with the most Hall of Famers comes up repeatedly on Twitter and whenever people find out I'm calculating that, I get the sense I'm disappointing them when I say, "I'm not done yet." But they can calculate it themselves if they want it so fast.

4. I'll probably do the next series fairly soon, like in the next two or three months. I want to get some '60s sets figured out and I'm curious about the 1984 set, too.
