Something to distract me

Right now, the Bills are playing a team I don't like, that I think is going to win and end the Bills season.

I could be wrong but that's not calming my nerves any several hours before the game. What I need is something to do unrelated to NFL playoffs, so I'm doing this. Writing words has a way of distracting me and calming me down.

Getting new cards can be a nice distraction, too. Hell, this whole hobby is a distraction.

I just received last week a nice, big package from Base Set Calling. It contained plenty of variety, which as you know can also be distracting -- oooh, look at this, ooooh look at this!

It was good for Brian to spread things around because there's bound to be dupes in any single category. For example:

These were all duplicates. They are very nice duplicates, which means I am sure there are upgrades here. But I have been quite active in my 1979 Topps football chase the last few months.

These, however, were needs and big names, too. They've waited patiently for me to write this post, and now they can go into their forever home.

I'm always going to encounter duplicates when somebody sends me Dodgers but that's fine, I can redistribute (there needs to be more Dodgers collectors though) but they also make me extra excited for the ones that are new to me. Each of the above are newcomers! That Andre Ethier hat relic is not anything I've ever seen and it's 16 years old.

Here are two '75-themed notables and they work together to demonstrate the mini size of the Bob Gibson 2024 Heritage mini insert. I've just finished paging my 2024 Heritage minis and super excited that they fit into the same binder as my regular-sized Heritage set. I suppose the binder is in trouble if Topps ever releases a Heritage High Numbers set, but who knows if that's ever going to happen (I heard "March," which would be wild, but can't confirm that's true).

The Ellie Hendricks buyback I have already.  I may offer up some of my '75 buyback dupes on the BlueSky trading thread eventually. Didn't get to that today. Too distracted.

Not a Dodger or a collection pursuit, but it does feature a Legend of Cardboard and it's also colorful and fancy. It clams it's a red refractor but it looks more orange, even in person.

Here is a mess of night cards (and night stickers). This made me pull out the Awesome Night Card binder to see which cards would be selected.

The Nolan Jones card completed page 7 of the binder. I featured that page wduring my first tour the ANC binder on the blog not even a year ago.

This is what it looked like then:

And this is what it looks like now:

I like it. Really not a dud among the nine and the Evan Carter card that I added in the last month really improved the page.

A couple of the Lineage night cards also made the binder, forcing out a couple of cards. The David Dahl card has a great background but just not enough of a match for Ichiro and his monster rookie trophy.

A couple more entrants that fill blank spots. Spencer Howard is card No. 649 and I need so many more of the higher-numbered cards in this binder.

As for the stickers, I'm not collecting night stickers. The Encarnacion does fill an empty spot though, so it's in the binder as a place-holder for now.

All those cards, though, don't explain the size of the box that arrived on the porch. That's because Brian packaged something else:

It's a great old-fashioned Dodgers pennant! He was hoping I'd do some investigating on the approximate time period for this pennant but, man, there's no time for that these days. It looks kind of old like it might be from the '60s or early '70s.

I didn't think I had any more wall space in the card room for something like this, but I just realized last night that there is space to the right of one of my shelves up high, so it looks like I'm going to have to get out the step ladder!

Who knows, I could be doing that during the game tonight in a fit of disgust. We'll see how the game goes. (EDIT: THEY WON!).

I've got to stop following so many sports.

Old Cards said…
When I saw the Bills score, they were ahead 21-10 and I figured they had it. I just checked the final after reading your post. No wonder you got nervous. I prefer Bob Gibson cards with his cap.
