Awesome night card, pt. 11

I figured if I'm going to show a football night card, this is the right time to do it. After all, this likely will be my last post until the weekend. And given that I'm taking a break for Thanksgiving, a football card is appropriate. As much as I hate to admit it, no one is thinking about baseball much on Thanksgiving. Football is king. I don't have many football cards anymore. I sold just about all of them about two years ago. All that's left are a handful with special meaning tucked away in a binder, its location unknown. But the football cards that Adam of Thoughts and Sox sent me will be reserved for that binder (as soon as I can find it), as well. Adam said it took him two days to find this Warren Moon 1990 Score card. Such dedication should be rewarded. Also, Adam said he came across this other card when he was searching for the Score card: He couldn't have possibly known that Moon and Kenny Stabler were my favorite quarterbacks on my favorite team when I was...

Dumpster diving

There's a fine art to dumpster diving, ladies and gents. When you spot someone inexplicably tossing baseball cards into the garbage, you musn't lose your head. You must remain focused, poised to plunge headlong into that festering, steaming, 30-foot-long pile of gunk, and save only the best of the cards from an eternity in landfill hell. So there I was, swimming through two-week-old banana peels, grandma's forgotten egg salad, and old copies of Sisqo CDs, in an attempt to rescue some Dodgers cards. I swam past the Tigers and Braves, Red Sox and Twins. I did the backstroke past the Yankees and sneared at the Giants as I went by. Then, there, just past some lonely Nationals cards, I spotted my prize -- 370 Dodgers cards. I quickly scooped them up. Mission accomplished, even if I stunk like 1988 Donruss. Actually, I endured nothing of the sort to rescue my Dodgers. Mark of Stats on the Back never made good on his threat to toss out any cards (at least not that I know of). Inst...

Easy does it

When I first started this blog, I stepped into the trading scene somewhat cautiously. My main intent with the blog was simply to write about baseball cards, whatever came into my head. I'm a writer, first and foremost. Trading sounded cool, but it wasn't my main objective. My, how things have changed in just over two months. I'm in deep when it comes to trades, and it's all very excellent. Meanwhile, some new blogs have started up recently, and the proprietor of one, The Easy Life , certainly didn't follow my lead. Steve is a trading machine. I see news of his trades all over Blogtopia even though his blog isn't even a month old. That's great. And what's even better are the cards that Steve sends in trades. Not only did he give me the final two cards for my Allen & Ginter set, but the card pile he sent me contained more inserts, parallels and jersey cards than I've seen in such a trade to date. This is definitely a case of quality over quantity....

Soap story

I believe I've officially arrived as a card blogger. I say that not because I received four separate card packages in the mail today (although that is way beyond awesome), but because those four packages mean that I am now majorly behind in returning cards to folks, and I've come to the realization that that is the way it's going to be from this point. So, if you're expecting a package from me, it IS coming. You are on my list. It just may take awhile, and with me being out of town for a few days, that won't be speeding things up any. And if you're not expecting a package from me, you may be getting one anyway. Because some of you are on my list for that, too. I'm also about to get behind on my emails because after tomorrow I probably won't be near a computer for a few days. But we could all use a little break from cards anyway, right? Riiiiiiiiiiiigggghht? Stop looking at me that way. Anyway, on to the post topic: I quite enjoy playing all the guessing...

Following the crowd

I decided to rip a pack of 2008 Topps Stadium Club here, because that's what all the kids are doing these days. You won't find me featuring the latest and greatest very often, so enjoy it while it lasts. Actually, I got this pack today so I can lead into something else. It has to do with the polls off to the right. I'll get to that in a minute. In the meantime, you might be asking yourself: only a pack? How come there's no blaster? And my response is: one month to Christmas my friends. No blasters until after then. If you want to see Stadium Club blasters, check out a number of the fine card blogs out there. Cardboard Icons, Free Andy LaRoche, Fielder's Choice, and a bunch of others have busted this stuff in the last few days. My quick thoughts on Stadium Club before I get to the cards: I respect Stadium Club, I recognize its ground-breaking ways, I like its photography. But I'm not ga-ga over it, like some are. Full-bleed photos contribute to a sameness in whi...

Cardboard appreciation: 1993 Topps Stadium Club Marquis Grissom

(Does every team still hold "Fan Appreciation Day" at the end of the season? I would hope so. With the cost of going to a ballgame, it's the least a team can do. In fact, what should happen are weekly "Fan Appreciation Days." How great would that be? A salute to the fans in Seattle one week, Arlington another, Cincinnati another. Anyway, this fan appreciates baseball cards. And these are my all-time favorites. This is the 7th in a series): I'm a sucker for blue. And I'm not alone. Blue is consistently voted the most popular color in periodic polls on the subject. Of course, my favorite team features one of the most recognizable blue uniforms in sports. But that's not why they're my favorite team (I'll post on how that came to be some day). The old Houston Oilers of the NFL wore baby blue uniforms. And that IS why they were my favorite team. My current favorite NFL team is the Bills, and they wear blue. My favorite hockey team is the Sabres, ...

More housekeeping

A few, small things while you stare at my dog's guilt-ridden face: 1. I am now a contributor to one of the most fascinating card blogs out there, Things Done to Cards . My first post on "Things Done" is up now and documents the sad story of a man, his dog and a handful of mangled baseball cards. I hope to contribute to "Things" here and there, though I think the majority of the posts are best left to the site's master, Steve, of White Sox Cards, and some of the other "Things" veterans. I'm just happy to be part of the team! 2. I'm looking for a decent, free, on-line checklist site to flesh out my want list. What I'm looking for is a site that allows you to search by team, so I can find the Dodgers in each release. Is Open Checklist the venue for that? I've looked at Open Checklist periodically, but haven't really tried searching by team. 3. I'll be going over the river and through the woods later this week to a land where i...
