Weathering the weather

It's been almost a daily ritual around here the last few weeks to clear snow off the car, out of the driveway, along the walkways. This morning I got up to pull my car in from the street and nearly face-planted because the snow was covering up a sheet of ice that fell around 4 a.m. last night (driving home from work was a bit of an adventure).

Through it all I think I've done an OK job of regularly sending out card envelopes and packages, although I've had to have the conversation with myself over whether it's safe to drive to the post office at least a half-dozen times.

But almost once a week I get there, and I'll be mailing out the latest downsizing box in the next trip. Meanwhile, I received cards (and other items) in response to my last downsizing send. Claimant Mike delivered!

This is not required nor expected but lets see the goods, there is quite the variety.

Starting with an owl card because owl.

It's been awhile since I've added a new owl card to the collection. Owlie is locked in a National Geographic world prison and branded the joker. Seems rude of NG. I'm assuming this is some playing card set.

Just a couple of Dodgers cards (emphasis on "cards," there is other Dodgers stuff). Kenta Maeda's time with the Dodgers is seeming like a long time ago. Also, unfortunately I just picked up that Nomo Starting Lineup card recently.

Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies. (Don't worry, it links to a song).

I'm not a wrestling fan, nor have I seen the second Terminator movie, but that won't stop me from adding these to the entertainment/nonsport binder. I like the backdrop to the Ring Divas set.

Now, here is the lady for a 15-year-old me. When someone says "Bo" the first person I think of is not Jackson.

There was a definite Ron Cey theme to this package. I just love old baseball snapshots. Cey looks smaller than the kid walking in front of him though that's probably the angle. I failed miserably at trying to identify players and coaches with Tom Lasorda in the dugout, which makes me know that this is spring training.

A pretty cool Hideo Nomo figure. This is so good I'll find space for it on top of the bookshelf in the card room.

The Brewers police cards are one of the ultimate modern day rabbit holes, I'm so glad I'm not a Brewers fan when I see these. It seems like every police department in Milwaukee issued a set that looks identical to the others.

So I don't know if these are two different Jackie cards or dupes but I'm thankful Milwaukee Police put a Jackie Robinson in their Brewers set!

Have I ever received a glove in a card package before? Well, I've been doing this a long time but I'm saying no. This is a kid's size glove and I was momentarily puzzled but I also know my collecting readers well and figured it had some connection to my collection.

It did:

It's the Ron Cey model! Man, some kid got super lucky. All I had was a dumb Tom Seaver model.

After all that you couldn't blame me if I was a bit discombobulated with what I had received. What's the best of the best?? But I already had that figured out because Mike sent me a whole card set:

This is the 1990 Agfa Film set, an unlicensed oddball set featuring old-timers. It looks great, even without the logos and the knowledge that these came three to a pack when you bought Agfa Film makes me want to go back to 1990 right now.

Old-timers sets have become very common over the years and you see the same old-timers over and over again, but there are certain legends that rise above and it's a thrill, even in an oddball set to get another card of Mays, Aaron, Berra and Clemente.

Perhaps in viewing the full set you noticed that Whitey Ford took "old-timers set" literally. I bet that's him at an Old-Timers Game, or maybe he's just helping out at Spring Training.

No surprise that Jim Palmer is the only player in set who is not wearing a hat.

That's a pretty good haul for just getting some cards out of my house. I do appreciate it a lot, but none of the downsizing deserves cards in response. I'm just happy the cards are being appreciated again after long losing their thrill at my home.

What. A. Haul. That AGFA set is really something neat and I'm surprised Palmer wore a cap during games; I bet he could have had an exemption from the Commission if either a) he'd asked or b) lady fans signed a petition.
I love the snow, as long as I don't have to go out in it.

That’s a new photo of Monty Basgall in that dugout shot. He was a longtime Dodgers coach and I always have trouble finding new photos of him while making customs.

Not a fan of oddball cards, but that Agfa Film set is A-OK!
That AFGA set is really cool.
