Greetings, my lovely readers.
There is one thing I love to do most when collecting cards. I think you know what that is.
I love to complete sets.
It's not easy to do and it's getting more difficult. But that's OK, I've completed plenty in my time. Even if I never completed another, I'd always have the dozens and dozens perfectly finished sets to view at my leisure.
Still, I press on.
Just yesterday I completed one. It was pretty easy. I finished 1989 Score.
It took not even a couple of months once I received a pile of them from Bru. And then the final handful showed up this week.
First, these three cards from Detroit Tigers Cards and Stuff. Ol' Boobie Maine happened to open a box of '89 Score at the same time I was trying to complete it! I guess that's not all that coincidental. Even 37 years later there's probably someone opening a box of the stuff almost every day.
The Brian Harper was the gremlin in the set that showed up when I was paging it, I was lucky to be able to clear that up fast.
That left a single card to obtain.
Tim Wallach.
Gee, I wonder who would have one of those to spare?
He did. The guy trying to collect all the Wallach cards gave one up. And now the set is complete. Thanks, Corey!
It's good to have connections.
I'm thrilled this set is complete and I'm sorry it took so long. As I mentioned previously, the only two brands I bought in 1989 were Topps and Score. Score was a sometimes purchase when I wanted to get away from all those '89 Topps dupes I had accumulated. But it does remind me of good times in 1989, just as the Topps set does, so it should be completed too as a proper tribute.
I also received other cards from both '89 Score suppliers.
You saw the terrific '70s Fleer stickers (from 1979) that Boobie Maine supplied.
And Corey found some modern Dodgers that I didn't have! It took some figuring to pin down what the All-Star Game Kershaw was. It's an insert in 2025 Topps Update but it's also foil. Turns out that's not a parallel, all the ASG inserts for 2025 are foil. Geez, Topps we don't have time for this.
Also I got a baby Corey Seager card from 2013 Bowman Chrome and the Rising Thru The Ranks insert set. It barely looks like him.
So, on Valentine's Day, I have my first completed set of 2026. Even if it happened the day before the holiday, it's still something I love to do.
May someone look at you the way I look at my completed sets.
