(Woooo, I can tell it's March! I've got so many things going on that I'm misplacing stuff like I'm my absent-minded grandma. Between the weather alerts, birthday preparations, endless playoffs, rising costs, deer running down my street (yes, that's a thing) -- ANYBODY KNOW WHERE MY DERMATOLOGY BILL WENT? Hell, let's go without one hour on the weekend, too. Nobody needs an extra moment to catch their breath at this time of the year!! Squeezing in a Cardboard Appreciation. This is the 366th in a series):
One of the reasons I'm still reading blogs 18 years in is because they continue to offer a wide variety of card subjects and cover them in-depth. Maybe youtube can do that, but who wants to listen to someone blather on about cards for that long?
Blogs are still good for unearthing cards that you didn't know you needed or for reminding you that you still need that card -- we old people who still read blogs are sometimes forgetful.
A couple of weeks ago, the Nine Pockets blog brought up a food issue set from the early 1990s -- the 1992 Pacific McDonald's St. Louis Cardinals set. I love a good food issue, though I'm not a Cardinals fan and the set reminded me how the look of food sets in the '90s kind of got away from what I loved about them in the '70s and '80s.
But the post did remind me of a '90s food set that has interested me for awhile. It looks more '80s than '90s ... and it's been taunting me for many years.
The 1990 Score McDonald's set -- officially known as 1990 McDonald's -- is a little elusive for showing up in the early '90s. Individual cards always sell for more than a buck, and the Ramon Martinez card in the set, the only Dodger, is usually between 6-10 dollars when I think to check for it.
My Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards says that the 25-card set was issued exclusively in Idaho and eastern Oregon. Well that's awfully specific! Patrons received four cards per large fries and drink order and production reportedly was around 4,000.
So I guess that's why the Martinez card has avoided my collection all these years until now! It arrived about a week ago. I'm thrilled. And it's all because of a post by Nine Pockets and because I still read card blogs.
It did cost me just over $7 with shipping included but I love the look of it. It is so Score and so food issue at the same time. The best of both worlds!
This is the first time I've ever said this but: people in Idaho and Eastern Oregon had it so good.
Anybody have this full set in their collection?
