Weather-delayed

I had planned to publish my giveaway contest post of the extra goodies I received from The Diamond King's giveaway today. A nice festive post to kick off the weekend.

But that's been weather-delayed. My backyard helps tell part of the story as it converts into a pond for the second time this winter. A warming trend, complete with howling winds to keep everyone up at night, came through just as I got off of work last night. I'm on no sleep and the gloomy, doomy sky is not ideal for taking pics and a photo-heavy post.

I had planned to display all the card goodies I'm giving away but also a bunch of recent cards I had received from people who had been spurred on by DK's original giveaway. But I can't show dark pictures on such a cheerful post! (This should be exactly the kind of spark that gets me to spring for scanner number 4 or 5).

So that post is pushed back, hopefully to Monday. The sun better be out -- or at least there better be snow on the ground, it's much brighter than rain. It shouldn't be 47 degrees right now anyway.

This forces me to pivot to something a little more weather-proof.

Yeah, this darn disc again. Don't worry, I got a story to go with it.

You may recall that the last time I wrote about the Ron Cey MSA discs from 1976/1977, I was moaning about an ebay seller who offered up one of the advertisement variations that I needed for $85. I passed on it but found another variation that I needed for much less.

Well, about three weeks ago I received another notification about a Cey MSA disc and it was the same Red Barn back that was selling for $85. This was a different seller. The disc was more than $70 less. And, even better, the auction was scheduled to end Christmas Day.

I was gleeful. Knowing I'd probably have no competition -- what loon besides myself is trying to land a boring-looking disc with a black-and-white mug shot of a player in an airbrushed hat on Christmas Day? Still, that afternoon I took up my post and watched as the seconds ticked down. Merry Christmas to me, I had won!

I can now tell my grandchildren that at 4:57 p.m. on Christmas 2025 I won the Red Barn Family Restaurants Ron Cey MSA disc -- right before they put me in a home.

It's super sweet that I was able to land it after the consternation I went through with that other disc. But that's not the end of the story. Four days after I won the Red Barn disc, I won another of the remaining backs that I needed -- the Customized Sports Discs variation.

Those are the two most recent disc backs in the Cey quest (that Customized Sports Disc one is quite meta).

Landing those two over Christmas break means I need just one more disc to wrap up all the backs for The Penguin. (I know there's a Red Barn variation without the restaurant address but I don't care about that).

All that's left is the Wendy's Restaurant variety. I know that one is rare, but I don't know how rare it is, both the Red Barn and Customized Sports Discs ones are known for being rare, too. I guess I'll find out.

As always, I have to show the progress in photo form.

Those are all the Cey disc fronts that I have now.

And those are all the glorious backs.

I did not expect to make progress this quickly but it's nice to be pleasantly surprised in this hobby especially lately.

OK, that's it for today. There's a window in the attic that's been thumping since overnight thanks to the wind that WILL NOT STOP and I need to shut it up.

Now that's a variation! Now that's a good variation! Wonderful. I was thrilled to see your post about winning this on BlueSky and get to relive that now via your good blog post. When you're stuck with a day, that's gray, and lonely, you just whip out a disc, and whisk, away..... Ron Cey.... Oh!..... Sorry.
congrats on the gets! now go get that last one

I remember seeing those Isaly's/Sweet William discs as a kid. Pretty sure the card shop I went to back in my home town had a complete set of those in one of their display cases.

The good thing about MSA discs is that they'll never get popular in the same way Kellogg's and Hostess cards have become popular. About all the only people you tend to bid against are fellow player and team collectors.

Glad you won the auction and didn't get beat out by some troll watching time tick down so they could enter 50 cents at the 59 second mark.

Nice finds there. I had no idea there were that many. We have 29 above and getting more snow as I speak. Enjoy the time even with the weather!

This is like watching the 1970s equivalent of T-206 collectors chasing rare backs. Love it.
