A 1983 Donruss pack break and a completely unrelated card

Isn't it the best when you get sick on the weekend? I'm way under the weather with what I think is a bad cold and it killed all my weekend catch-up plans. I'm pretty much in a zombie state, waiting for my next round of meds.

I'm a little more capable of sitting upright today so I can get a post out for you to read. A little under a week ago, when I was operating properly, I received another surprise package from CardBoredom. I really like his thoughtful posts and am always interested in people's cardboard origination stories, which the most recent post tackled.

CardBoredom had taken notice of my recent 1983 Donruss chase and sent me a "lightly sealed" pack of '83 Donruss. This is pretty cool. I've mentioned before that I bought just three packs of Donruss that year, so not even the pack wrapper is familiar to me.

Let's open up this back, but not before consulting the few remaining cards I need in the set:

277 - Ryne Sandberg
530 - Whitey Herzog
533 - Sparky Anderson
586 - Wade Boggs
Checklist: 443-546

What are the chances I get one of those? Let's see.

589 - Bert Blyleven
76 - Johnny Wockenfuss
192 - Bob Boone

Nice. Two catcher shots, including a guy who I've interviewed, and a Hall of Famer.

308 - Ed Lynch
425 - Jerry Royster
1 - Fernando Valenzuela, Diamond King

OK, lookee here. I'm familiar with the Fernando Valenzula Diamond King but don't know if I need an extra for my set chase. I've been paging the '83 set into a binder and I noted the empty slot for the first card, I didn't know which one that was until now. So this just might come in handy!

522 - Ray Knight
636 - Brett Butler
125 - Johnnie LeMaster

A second-year Brett Butler and Ray Knight in between two more notable moment of his career -- replacing Pete Rose with the Reds, and World Series heroics with the Mets.

241 - Fred Lynn
357 - Tippy Martinez
474 - Jeff Leonard

Fred Lynn is the key card of this bunch, but the other two are fun as well. This is a good pack!

590 - Dick Howser
77 - Jim Palmer
193 - Britt Burns

More good stuff, though none of the players/managers from my want list above. That's OK, I think that Valenzuela will come in handy!

Now let's see the puzzle pieces:

Thrilling. I recall not being impressed at all with Donruss' puzzles, I much preferred Fleer's stickers.

But 15 cards in a pack is pretty impressive, I almost forgot how some of the brands in the '80s stuffed more than your average 10 cards into a pack.

So that was the pack, but there was one other cards. Here, I'll let the content information clue you in:

All right, that caused me to stand up and take notice.

The '49 Leaf Dodger I know, of course, is Jackie Robinson. There's no way that CardBoredom is sending out 1949 Leaf Jackie Robinsons. But honestly I didn't realize there's another Dodger in the set -- it's not a set I come across every day.

Oooooh, that's still so cool. I don't have a lot of '40s cards compared to the '50s and every one is fascinating. That's a 77-year-old card! Hermanski was a starting outfielder for the Dodgers during the late '40s until eventually getting traded to the Cubs in 1951.

That was quite a surprise and a whole lot of fun. Thanks, CardBoredom!

Hopefully the next time you see a post I'll be feeling better.

CardBoredom is not boring at all!
Sweet! That's a good pack you got there which was only slightly overshadowed by the 1949 card. I miss opening packs like that.

Get well soon!

'49 Leafs are quite rare. That's a great pickup. Cardboredom strikes again!

Nice wrapper and pack! Brings back those memories of Little League. And it's not every day a '49 Leaf just shows up in casual conversation!

Cardboredom is the best, that '49 Leaf is super cool!
Very nice. I think I have one of those Leaf cards, but it may be a 1950... not too familiar with the set(s).
