Just me and the robots out here

There's a certain amount of isolation built into being a blogger, or a writer in general. I don't know if that's exactly the right word but I definitely have the feeling of being on my own island from time to time, and probably more often lately.

There's no easy way to gauge who is reading your copy or how often. Blogger (and I'm assuming Wordpress) is imperfect like that. All you have are comments -- and Blogger has now made that more difficult by requiring you to use the Google Chrome browser to comment on its blogs (but I make sure to go that extra step to comment on other blogs). And also you have reader numbers, and wow is that inaccurate, especially lately.

Have any other bloggers experienced this?:

These are the viewer numbers for my posts on NOC for the last week or so. Numbers are on the far right. They are wildly beyond what is typical. The same holds true for my 1993 Upper Deck blog, where posts the last couple of cards is in triple digits when the blog typically averages about a pathetic 50-60 views per.

Here are the viewer numbers for the week prior, also elevated, but I didn't suspect anything until my post on left-handers eclipsed 900.

These are more typical viewer numbers, from late July.

Comments have been down lately -- because of Google requirements or whatever -- but viewer numbers have skyrocketed, which can mean only one thing:

Bots.

Yep, it's just me and the robots out here. Thanks robots, for showing that you care.

I'm joking. I know that people -- real people -- read and care about this blog. I have to kick myself out of that funk periodically. But card arrivals help me out of the darkness, too.

For example, the Jose Valentin card at the top of this post. I received this card last week from reader kcjays. He had read my post about completing the 2006 Topps gold Dodgers set and that I noted that TCDB had included the Jose Valentin card in with the Dodgers team list, even though he's listed as a Met on the card.

KCjays went to the trouble of not only getting the TCDB listing fixed (Valentin is now on the Mets checklist) but he ordered the Valentin card for me! Very cool.

This card arrived in my mailbox from Uncle Charlie's Shoebox, one of those blogs that I can't comment on unless I call up the Google browser. So I do!

He emailed me that he had pulled this pink chrome sparkle Kershaw from 2025 Heritage and now it's here! All it cost me was a few Heritage Cubs -- I just might have a few dupes from that set hanging around. Just a few.

So that was also very cool.

And so is -- always -- an envelope from jacobmrley/Max, which also showed up last week.

From top to bottom, a 1994 Score Gold Rush Dodgers team card, a 2025 Topps diamante foil Tyler Glasnow, a 2023 Topps Archives Luis Robert and a 1991-92 Pro Set French card of the Sabres' Randy Wood.

Very nice to get the '94 Score card, I need to do more with that parallels set for the Dodgers, not as active on that as I was with the Topps gold cards. The Glasnow card is nice, too, he's been a bit of a bust with the Dodgers this year. I think the Luis Robert night card will make the night card binder, the 1990 Upper Deck Bob Welch is in that spot now, but Robert shows actual lights.

So, it's gestures like this that help keep me and this blog going. I think I'd still be blogging if I didn't receive cards in the mail or even if I didn't get hardly any comments (see: the early, early  days of this blog), but sometimes you need that affirmation. That's why it's great that there are people like Fuji, who will always comment.

Because someday the bots will be gone.

Comments

My views have definitely gone up from the teens to the hundreds. And I figured it was bot activity too because no one cares about Kruk, Strawberry, and the other etc/inane things I write about. But that's fine.

I guess that's proof that bots are discerning readers as well??? Maybe they're Dodger fans? Who knows?
Yes indeed, for the last week and half the bots have been tearing it up.

I read each of your new posts, so count one for the humans.

Oh, yeah, I'm suddenly getting view counts over 500 for stuff that under most circumstances rarely getting over 100 - and that usually takes weeks to reach those numbers. I figured it was unlikely that Japanese baseball cards suddenly caught everyone's imagination

Another human checking in here (also commenting from a non-Chrome browser as well). I am seeing the same thing over the past week on Blogger, with whatever is driving the traffic trying to spoof its origins. FWIW, sometimes I will direct an AI system towards a poorly written blog (obviously not anything you are putting out there) and ask it to present the content to me as if it were instead written by a seasoned sports reporter. Some of those models seem to produce a spike in traffic but nothing quite like this.

I read your posts. If it's a long one about modern cards. I might just scan it, but at least, I check in as a human!

15.9 percent of your total views on your blog have come since early June. Its 15.2 for Fuji. Something is going on - with the blogs

I enjoy your posts and it’s nice to think that we aren’t writing or painting for the bots. Though sometimes I just get the Cut Chemist song “The Robots are Coming” stuck in my head when I think about them and then it doesn’t feel quite so bad. At any rate, keep posting. And I’ll keep reading.

I immediately think that AI scrapers are the culprits here. But I also have to confirm that my blog (wordpress) isn't showing anything like this. Pretty sure most of my hits are my mom and Fuji.

Nice to know I wasn't alone, my latest post has nearly 8x the usual view count. My blog isn't even searchable on Google so God knows how the bots found it.

My blog traffic for the past two years is about 10 times higher than it was for the decade before and I'm certain that none of that increase is from actual human beings.

Partial proof of this is that 8 out of the top 10 countries where visitors allegedly come from are places with almost no interest in baseball (the US and Japan being the two exceptions). I find it hard to believe that tens of thousands of views I get from each of Russia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Sweden, Brazil and Singapore are from actual human beings looking to read about baseball cards.

Fellow human here, happy to be a faithful reader and very rare commenter.
Blog visits are definitely up and I haven't even posted anything in quite a while. I have lots of problems commenting on others' sites that I never had a problem with before (Fuji, Johnny, etc).

On analytics, seems to indicate referring site is Google.com, so likely something going on with AI searches?

Greg: I read all of your Night Owl blog posts. I am a human. Please keep up the good work. Once volleyball season is over I have a bunch of Dodgers to send you. Bill

Are you saying that 2,928 people weren't interested in my recent post about Barry Larkin's 1996 Panini Sticker?!

Yep, the bots are at it again!

I'm just a real person reader out here. I'm not a blogger but probably could if I wanted to add something new to my journey called life. Nice cards you got. Aren't the parallels fun to figure out? Enjoy the day all!

No wonder I had so much difficulty commenting on the blogs. I missed that memo about the Chrome browser.

I hadn't checked lately; sure enough I am up for tens to hundreds. Commenting on a Firefox browser which has not been a problem. I am also able to comment on my phone with Safari browser.

A. Damn robots. I had a pair of 4k posts... when I'm lucky to get 10% of that. Heck most of my posts are in the 150 to 250 views range.

B. I looked through my 1970 Laughlin World Series cards to see if I could help you. Unfortunately the only one on your list was the Gehrig which happens to be one of the keepers.
Another human here that loves your blog. Based on the results of the annual TCDb "best blog" category every year I'm happy to see that there are many of us out there.

I've been noticing the same thing with the reader totals. I initially chalked it up to being listed on the TCDB, but then my latest post, titled "My Virtual National" has has over 1000 reads in the last week! No way those are real people. The map shows the bulk of them are in the US, but I'm still suspicious. I had noticed before that any post with "cardboard" in the title got a lot more views. Gotta be bots either way....I've never been that popular, especially now that I only post a couple times a month and still only have about 60 followers.

I've also noticed the jump in views to insane levels. 4 of my posts from the past two weeks are now in my top 5 all-time viewed. It's suspicious to say the least...
