Cardboard appreciation: 1982 Donruss Phil Garner

(A few more "appreciation days": Ancestor Appreciation Day (Sept. 27), Birthday Appreciation Day (Feb. 24), Swimming Pool Appreciation Day (July 21). All that and still no Baseball Card Collectors Appreciation Day. On to more cardboard appreciation. These are my all-time favorites, and this the 11th in a series):

I know this isn't the first or the only "reverse negative" error card. Or the first or only reverse negative error card that was later corrected. But it is my favorite "reverse error negative card that was later corrected." You know why?

Because I own both of them, that's why! And I didn't track them down on eBay or find them in a card shop, or nab them at a card show. I pulled both of them from separate Donruss packs in 1982.

And when I did, I thought it was the most fantastic thing ever (keep in mind Phoebe Cates was on the big screen in 1982, so that's saying something). Even if you discount the whole backward "3" and "P," and all that other reverse photo jazz, it's still a great card. Garner's wearing the old-fashioned square cap! And he's dressed up like a school bus! It's awesome with an extra helping of awesome!

I believe both of these cards go for no more than 20 cents. Neither card is apparently all that rare. But I don't care. You can't put a price on this.

Phil, you may be backward and dressed to stop traffic all the way on the other side of the world, but there is nothing that will get me to part with these two cards (well, I think there's a '56 Jackie Robinson out there that may make me think twice).

1982 Donruss Phil Garner(s), I appreciate you.

Back in 1982, I am pretty sure I would of taken Phoebe Cates - she was about all that was on my mind. but the point is well stated.

I'll freely admit that I had to look up Phoebe Cates on Wikipedia to see what you guys were talking about. I was too old in 1982 for Fast Times At Ridgemont High to have any effect on me.

But you're never to old to enjoy seeing both versions of that Phil Garner card.
Thanks for posting a link to you post. This is truly an awesome card.

Is the pic of Phil in a Pirates uni another "error"? I know he began the '81 season with the Pirates, but how could no one at Donruss get him in an Astros uniform? It looks like spring training, so I guess they were at work pretty early, but still.

And I love that you called it a school bus!

Donruss didn't produce another card of Phil in an Astros uniform in '82.

Garner was traded in late August of 1981. That would've been too late for the card companies to get a photo of Garner in an Astros uniform back then. Topps also featured Garner as a Pirate in their '82 set, but then had him as an Astro in the '82 traded set.

I've been struggling with the best way to place errors and corrections like these in my set binders. Next to eachother? At the end of the set? I'm always afraid I'll discover a new alternative for a card and have to adjust the whole album. Suggestions?

Normally, I store errors/corrections like this at the end of the set (re: '79 Bump Wills card).

But with Garner, it's so fun to see them side by side that I'd make an exception and put them next to each other. Everything that has ever been known about '82 Donruss has been discovered already, so I think you're safe.
