Night Owl Cards

  Here in the Northeast, August is still summer vacation. Hearing about people going back to school this week in the south or out west is disturbing and I'm grateful I have only known stepping into a classroom for the first time during September.   However, August is nothing great here either. I've written many times about "August dread" -- I've experienced it since I was a little kid. And with my job for the last 30-plus years, August remains the calm before the storm -- a month's worth of trying to squeeze in every bit of fun you can before the education system saps your will to live.   Also, August, for this house, is a month of less money (the education system pays the bills). I don't cut out card spending completely as I did during past Augusts, but I still need to watch the budget. I balance the lack of funds with the need for cards to dull the August edge -- card by card. Singles are the way to go this month, rather than boxes or packs.   So here ar...

  I have a lot of cards. TCDB says I have 101,790, and I know for a fact that I have more than that, even without including all the Dodgers dupes. So I realize it's not easy to find cards to send me even with a lot of interests. Yet, people still try and I really do appreciate it. Some attempts have been made recently that I need to acknowledge here, there was varying success.   An envelope of cards from the very busy Fuji . The purpose of this send was supplying me with one of the three remaining cards I need from the 1985 Rock Star Concert set. All that's left is a Huey Lewis card and another Pat Benatar card (think the "Love Is A Battlefield" video). Fuji added a couple of Baseball Card Magazine cards from the early '90s, but I own each of those already.   So, way back before my vacation started, more than three weeks ago now, I met Angus of Dawg Day Cards for lunch. He was passing through town on his way to a concert. I was one day away from vacation with a ton of crap to get done, but we made it work and settled into our usual Buffalo Wild Wings spot -- like literally the same table -- to talk sports card shop.   Angus showed up offering gifts, as he often does. We had a bit of a wait before our meals appeared so I dug into the cards right away.   Although the selection contained the usual baseball, I'd say the highlight were the music cards, particularly one music card set.   Music is my second-favorite card thing to collect after baseball. Yes, even more than football or anything else. I think I've made that obvious on this blog. Music rivals baseball for my main interest all the time.
