Hey there, 1940s

Here is what I know about the 1940s, off the top of my head:   World War II, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the atomic bomb. Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier. The Dodgers' emergence as an iconic baseball team. I can name all the World Series matchups, though you might have to give me some time on 1942, 1943. Mickey Owen's dropped third strike. Cookie Lavagetto, Bill Bevens, Al Gionfriddo's catch. Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak and Ted Williams hitting .406 in 1941. I know most of the stars of 1940s MLB.   The Andrews Sisters. Glen Miller's Orchestra. My grandmother used to talk about Glen Miller a lot. Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby. The songs that played on WECK in Buffalo in the 1980s, which were the "golden oldies" of that time (as opposed to "oldies," which was '60s music). It's A Wonderful Life. White Christmas. Johnny Marks' Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.   I know my mom was born in the '40s. So was my uncle. He's...

Back home

I've been going to the card shows at the New York State Fairgrounds since before I started this blog. My guess on the year I first went is possibly 2007, maybe 2006. I wasn't seriously back into the hobby until then.   For many of the years that I attended, the shows were in the Horticultural Building, which I think is the biggest building at the fairgrounds (I only go to the fairgrounds for card shows, have never been to the state fair).   That building can fill a whole bunch of tables and it feels like home to me. But for a number of years now -- I'd say a good decade, it's been in the smaller Science & Industry Building -- which is around the corner. I sound like I know what I'm talking about here, but I don't have a good handle on the names of these buildings, as Angus of Dawg Day Cards found out Saturday when we drove to the show.   We got an earlier start than we usually do. The show was closing an hour earlier, at 3 p.m., because the building was h...

Stacking up and stocking up

The last three weeks I've averaged three posts a week, which is an all-time production low on Night Owl Cards.   I'm OK with it, which is not something I could say for the majority of the time I've been running this blog. But it's not like I have a choice. So I've accepted it, with the hope that I'll return to at least 5 posts a week, but not expecting that to happen.   Some of the old "requirements" of this blog remain in place though, clinging to the "old ways." One of those is "blog about every card package you have received from others." But when you cut down on blogging time, the cards pile up.   Another requirement is "keep the card room relatively orderly." My card room isn't immaculate, I don't think anybody's should be. But I've got the neatness gene and I can't handle cards piling on top of cards, potentially falling on the floor, so the cat will think it's a new play thing and bop them...
