C.A.: 1991 Topps Desert Shield Kal Daniels

(Greetings, thanks for squeezing me in between postseason viewings. I tried to squeeze in a card show over the weekend, the monthly one. I left without buying a thing, partly due to having limited interests this time around, finding nothing that intrigued me that I could afford and, the clincher, a collector's behavior that turned me off so much, I eventually left. This should be its own post, but I've actually griped about this same collector a few months ago. Time for something happier. Cardboard Appreciation. This is the 373rd in a series):   I added this 1991 Topps Desert Shield card of Kal Daniels last week thanks to CardBoredom, who was giving away assorted unwanted cards from his collection.   I didn't know there are two CardBoredom collecting sites until Baseball Cards Come to Life noted the one site in which David was giving away cards. I just knew the more long-form blog , which is full of well-researched accounts and stories, so well-done in fact that it drew...

A 1983 Donruss pack break and a completely unrelated card

Isn't it the best when you get sick on the weekend? I'm way under the weather with what I think is a bad cold and it killed all my weekend catch-up plans. I'm pretty much in a zombie state, waiting for my next round of meds.   I'm a little more capable of sitting upright today so I can get a post out for you to read. A little under a week ago, when I was operating properly, I received another surprise package from CardBoredom. I really like his thoughtful posts and am always interested in people's cardboard origination stories, which the most recent post tackled.   CardBoredom had taken notice of my recent 1983 Donruss chase and sent me a "lightly sealed" pack of '83 Donruss. This is pretty cool. I've mentioned before that I bought just three packs of Donruss that year, so not even the pack wrapper is familiar to me.   Let's open up this pack, but not before consulting the few remaining cards I need in the set:   277 - Ryne Sandberg 530 - Wh...

Dodger fan in mourning

Father's Day ended in pretty sucky fashion yesterday. Right in the middle of a dinner prepared to my specific requests, I heard hushed voices coming from my laptop over in the living room. I ignored it for a little bit -- I really like burgers and deviled eggs -- but it kept hushing and I had to go and check it out. There I saw people hunched over Mookie Betts, who was having difficulty getting up. I couldn't see the number so I couldn't tell who it was, I just knew it was a Black man. It didn't seem like Jason Heyward, not large enough. It didn't seem like Teoscar Hernandez, not enough beard. Finally I saw the name and, well, that's how you ruin Father's Day. Thanks a lot, Dan Altavilla, who I had never heard of until yesterday. I used to write about the Dodgers as a fan quite a bit on this blog. A lot of rah-rah rooting stuff. I moved away from it because I never felt comfortable with it and focusing more on cards seemed more natural. But I am still a Do...
