Count me out of the rat race

We're in February now and you know what that means -- the first new cards of the season.

I think Topps is still issuing 2025 sets but the first for real-for real 2026 set is scheduled for release a week from Wednesday -- Series 1 of flagship drops on Feb. 11.

Every year since connecting with the collecting community on social media I've had to fight the urge to find the first cards of the season as early as possible. When blogs were THE THING it was a race to find those cards and I'd lament never getting the jump on spotting them first. When Twitter was THE THING I'd marvel at how collectors would display the first cards of the season even before the release date. HOW? And I'd try desperately to get to Target or Walmart to find my own. Sometimes it would take 5 or 6 tries to spot the new cards.

In more recent years I've paced myself, ignored the "fomo" feeling and calmly collecting the current sets at my own rate. Each year for the last three years there's been a set to collect. In 2023 it was Heritage. In 2024 it was flagship and Heritage. In 2025 it was Heritage.

Here we are in 2026 with Feb. 11 rapidly approaching (we just got done with the fastest January ever) and I see no 2026 card chasing in the coming year. I don't plan to try to complete a single set. Heritage will be tempting -- the '77 design you know -- but I think this past year's Heritage experience will scare me off.

If anyone doubts me or if I have my own doubts, know that I've been practicing. Let's review the most recent sets to arrive:

2025 Topps Holiday (Oct. 22 release): Got a value box as a gift, haven't bought any myself
2025 Topps Update (Nov. 12): Have purchased none except a Dodgers team set
2025 Topps Allen & Ginter (Dec. 3): Have bought none
2025 Topps Archives (Dec. 12): Bought a blaster with a gift card. Underwhelming
2025 Topps Heritage High Numbers (Dec. 17); Have bought nothing

I am so ready to ignore 2026 cards.

I'm not quitting entirely. You'll still see 2026 card purchases here and there but it will be small sampling (again, we'll see with Heritage). And I will still want some of those 2026 cards in my collection, particularly Dodgers.

That's why I appreciate when collectors like Rod of Padrographs send me current cards. I get to see what I've been (intentionally) missing.

Here are some of the legends cards in 2025 Allen & Ginter. This is the most 2025 A&G I have seen in person. It's not my favorite design even with the colors changing on each card.

A couple of 2025 Archives legends, too. My black border Bo is going away so it's nice to have the base version.

And Rod very nicely made the 2025 Dodgers the majority of the package. Some base with a couple inserts and parallels mixed in. Good deal.

Some shiny current cards of Dodgers utility infielder Hyeseong Kim. Not feeling the 2025 Finest design but that's hit-and-miss every year.

Rod is into the online-only retro tobacco minis I guess? Here are three Dodgers. T205's are nice-and-colorful.

And a couple of Allen & Ginter minis for the frankenset binder! Both of these gain entrance into the binder -- not an easy task!

Lastly, Rod included a nifty 1974 baseball guide. I'm guessing this is from his military days? The contents feature stats and write-ups on all the teams from that time. It's a lot of fun to see, for example, who was on the White Sox then and what their stats are -- I know there's baseball-reference but I still like the hard-copy book version.

So that's how it's going to be for the next year. I'll welcome 2026 cards from friends and I'll pick some up whenever the mood strikes. It definitely won't be on Feb. 11 or even in the week that follows. Who knows when it will be, but all I know is that when I do land a couple of packs it will all be new to me and that's what matters.

I feel these are the times you have to take a hard look at whether the here and now stuff worth the chase.

I like your strategy - "ready to ignore." Those baseball guide books were a must read for me back in the day. I still have several of them.
I did the same for a few years as well. Also that was back when a hobby box was well below current rates. I could even afford a jumbo box one year!!! Not any longer though.

I find that walks for our local Walgreens for a blaster is what I like to do. It’s a good motivator for walking nearly two miles!

I buy retail, and, no matter if its Florida, or, here in Michigan, it takes at least a week fir them to show up at our local Walmart.

I'm still a diehard Topps flagship fanboy and I'm eagerly awaiting my Series 1 Jumbo box to arrive on my doorstep on Feb. 11 (or maybe earlier if I'm lucky). And I'm pretty sure I'm older than most of you, lol.
I got a package from Rod last week also, lots of first cards for me too in it. There has been 5 more sets that you missed that came out in the last few weeks. LOL!

I plan on buying very little of 2026 product. Maybe a hanger box if they appear at Walmart. I will get my factory set around my birthday and call it done. Tue hard decision for me will come with next year's Heritage. 78 was the first packs I ever bought. However, topps is really making it hard to get excited for the newer stuffs
I found one pack of the T205 somewhere. I also know how you like baseball and saw the booklet in a shop and immediately thought of you. Go Navy! Beat Army!

I just saw 2026 Topps boxes on Target's website, but I didn't buy any. Not in love with the design and will probably save up to buy a complete set of 2025 Topps or maybe buy some blasters of Series 1 and 2 to build it.

P.S. That McGriff is cool. Don't see him representing the Cubs very often.

Just waiting to see what A&G looks like. I have better luck doing Heritage sets years after they come out. Not doing flagship unless the design is totally amazing (and I start watching baseball again).

I'll have to edit my pile of '25 A&G I set aside for you before sending...

I've long since relegated my new product purchases to breaks as a reasonable way to get a couple of team sets plus randomness. Not as much fun as ripping packs and definitely a week or so delayed from release day but Topps/Fanatics has made it obvious that ripping packs is for suckers now.

The best part of that baseball guidebook are the instructions for how to get to each stadium.

I’m retiring and after years of telling myself that I need to limit my card purchases, the moment has finally arrived.
I’ll continue to buy my Topps factory set and put together a Stadium Club set, but my Royals team sets will be “trimmed” to a select few. Heritage, A&G, Update and maybe Holiday. We’ll see if I can stick with it. Trading on TCDb is fun and helps.
Good luck with your 2026 card collecting journey.

As always, it's wait 'til the factory sets come out in the summer. Can't wait for the Heritage to drop. '77s were some of the first cards I had, I completed that set a few years ago.
I take it there isn't Stadium Club this year...

Those guides are always a fun read. I still find them at used bookstores from time to time.

I usually buy a pack or two of the new Topps flagship set because I would like to see what the cards look like in my hand. Of course, these days that means spending at least $5. Not that I could buy a cup of Starbuck’s coffee with that money anyway.
Good, good luck with this New Year's Resolution to avoid 2026. I imagine a lot of it will find you, because your readers are both thoughtful and generous. That might lead you down the path of only getting for yourself what you want to have. And that also means less to downgrade and jettison off.

I know its been this way for years, but I still find it insane that I can't simply go to a store and buy packs of Topps. They cater exclusively to the golden wonka ticket chaser crowd now. I'll pick up a factory set in August and maybe a pack if I happen to see one before then.
