It was a good day

I like to think of myself as a simple man. I look around me and everyone everywhere is making things complicated. Complicated lives. Complicated policies. Complicated world. I like things simple. But sometimes I look at my blog posts and they aren't simple at all. A lot of them are long and over-the-top. The opposite of simple. That disturbs me sometimes. So I thought I'd do something about that and write a simple post. Here it is: Today was rather complicated. There were computer problems. There was an accident in the city that knocked out power during rush hour. There was my daughter's homework in which I had to teach myself a math concept that I hadn't thought about in 30 years. And this was all on a day off for me. The day was frustrating. Infuriating even. But it was a good day. You know why? Because I crossed off the last card I needed to complete my 1995 Score Dodgers team set. There is Tom Candiotti now. The card arrived to me from Ma...

This place is a disaster

Today I interviewed the head equipment manager for the 49ers. He's a very busy guy these days, as you can imagine. He used to be an athlete, but moved into this line of work when an injury ended his playing days. The reason he stayed in his new career, keeping track of jerseys and pads and everything else for NFL teams, is because it appealed to the organizational aspect of his personality. In fact, he said he used to spend hours organizing his baseball cards. The light bulb went on above me. "Hey! I like organizing baseball cards! Maybe I could have become an equipment manager for a Super Bowl team!" Then I looked at my desk at work. Papers from years ago, scattered everywhere. Then I came home and looked at my card desk. Cards, from months ago, scattered everywhere. "No," I thought. "'Rumpled, disheveled journalist' fits me just right." But I really do need to clear off my card desk a little bit. There's a card show comin...

I'll get there

I am still not over my illness, but there are a few signs that things are improving. Things like being able to focus enough to type these sentences or concentrate on a football game on television. I rarely get sick, so this was a doozy. And I still don't feel up to it enough for a proper post. I have never been so disinterested in blogging -- or just about everything -- in the last few days. But I thought I'd get on here and show some cards I received, because, you know, that's what we do when we're healthy: These are three high-numbered '71 needs from Matt at Card Anathema . Thanks to Matt I'm down to needing just nine cards to complete the set. I owe Matt some cards. I owe several people some cards. Obviously, with the way things have been I am behind in every aspect of life, including trade packages. I'll get there. But for now, just know it took every ounce of energy to scan these three cards.
