A very bloggy Christmas

Do you remember when you were a kid and you opened your presents on Christmas eve or Christmas morning, but that wasn't the end of Christmas? In the days that followed, relatives would arrive bringing even more presents. Or you would pack up and head to some distant location to re-celebrate Christmas with other family members. The only thing better than one Christmas was two Christmases. Well, the wonderful blogging community has continued that tradition, speeding up the arrival of Christmas with packages in the mail, accompanied by Merry Christmas/Happy Holiday wishes. These people are so together. First of all, they timed their packages to arrive before the holiday. Secondly, they didn't mind waiting in some insane line at the post office to ship stuff off. So I am enjoying Christmas before Christmas arrives! These are some of the holiday goodies I have received from bloggers . I started it off with a Christmas card from Dave of Tribe Cards. That was very nice. He admitted i...

Even more amazing true stories of internet generosity

Hey, every good post deserves a sequel , right? I received a card package to end all card packages yesterday. And given the generous packages I have gotten in the past, that is saying something. But I'm not going to reveal it now. All I'm going to say about it is this: it contained more than a dozen AU/GU cards. Yeah, I know. And that isn't close to the whole story. But you're going to have to wait on that one, because I still haven't gotten through the packages that were sent before Thanksgiving. And if there is one thing you may have gleaned from Night Owl it is that Everything. Must. Go. In. Order. Or. The. World. Will. Spin. Off. Its. Axis. Into. The. Great. Abyss. Fortunately, two bloggers known for their generosity sent me cards during that period. So I can stay with the whole generosity theme and no one will need to take any sedatives. I am combining the two packages into this one post in a futile effort to catch up. The first set of cards is from Dan, box b...

How intriguing

I used one of my daughter's favorite words in the post title, kind of to celebrate that she's back to her goofy self after her bout with the flu. She will often talk about words she likes. She likes the sounds they make. "Intriguing," is one. So is "information." She has a whole list of them. Completely random words that roll off her tongue. "Intriguing" also describes the card packages that have arrived here recently. Intriguingly, none of these packages are connected to trades. In fact, most of them are "gifts." And because of their similar nature, I thought I'd throw them all together to share the intrigue with everyone. The first card is the Ryan Howard card that leads off the post. Chris from Nachos Grande read that I needed the card for the Allen & Ginter set and shipped it off to me. Howard will always be cool to me even if he did struggle periodically in the World Series. (My daughter told me that she heard Yankees suppo...

I have connections

This is my first cut signature card. I suppose if I'm going to own a cut signature card it should be of my favorite player of all-time, right? This card came to me from Dan, who as you all know runs Saints of the Cheap Seats . He picked it up at The National. What a guy. One of the many great things about having a blog and collecting cards is you build connections like this. There was no way I was going to be able to go to The National. I didn't even ask anyone to get me anything there. Yet, I ended up with this card. Wow. This is a Fleer card from 2002. I was totally unaware that they were doing cut signatures back then. I do not follow cards like this. I've said before the concept of cut signatures baffles me. I do not believe in destroying other signed cards or historical documents to create cut signatures. And I do not understand why people go ga - ga over them. I'm trying to figure out what Ron Cey signed that Fleer then cut up and pasted into this card. It ha...

I get stuff

Nice, right? That's a sketch card from Jeremy of No One's Going to Read This Blog . It looks very much like this year's Allen & Ginter black-bordered cards. Me likey . I might have to incorporate into my blog somehow. Jeremy was great enough to send this, along with a few cards. I've mentioned before that I am always amazed by what fellow traders send in conjunction with their cards. It makes me want to do the same. I try to send a note, but really I've got to personalize my card packages a bit more. Who knows if I'll actually go through with it. Like the Dodgers with men on base, execution is something of a problem. I thought I'd feature a handful of non-card items that I've received in the last week or so, along with some of the cards. First I'll show a couple of cards that Jeremy sent since I like them so much. This card means I am finished with the 2006 Topps base and Updates & Highlights base set. I have all 989 cards of the fi...
