Showing posts with the label first cards of the year

This is it

First, I want to apologize for shunning your 2023 Topps Series 1 posts. I wanted to look at them, I really did, but I was trying to avoid First Cards Of The Year Overkill. That's difficult to do when you're on social media, especially bleeping Twitter. I made a concerted effort to cut down on viewing 2023 images but a few flashers jumped in front of me -- HERE, TAKE A LOOK AT THIS . YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!   It was tough to avert my eyes. It was a little easier on the blogs. As soon as I got a hint that the subject was 2023 Topps I jumped out of the chat. I did succumb to a couple (Card Junk and Padrographs, I think) and left a comment. Of course, now that I've found some 2023 myself, I have to go back and comment on all those posts.  So, yup, this is it. It's the 2023 Topps Series 1 post on Night Owl Cards. This Is It!   I'm purposely late -- not as late as last year but still way past time according to some bananas collectors. I'm out of that rat race and I w...

My first 2010 Topps pack has a southern accent

For real this time. No funny business . I actually did receive my first pack of 2010 Topps cards on Monday. But it didn't come from Target. And it didn't come from Wal -Mart. It came from Georgia. Yep. The southerners with the beautiful weather and the beautiful women and all the best card shops are taking pity on me again. Or at least one guy is. And I'll gladly accept his pity this time, and also display it here for all to see. Dayf sent me an unopened pack of baseball cards! Well, damn, let's see what I tore open in the school parking lot as the wind tried to topple my vehicle! First the note. My scanner doesn't like hand-writing. So, if you can't read it, it sayeth : "Hi Owlie . You never get these up in the frozen north until they've been everywhere else for two weeks. I thought you'd like a pack early for a change. Enjoy! Dave." Aww . I really, really like pity. We actually don't have any snow on the ground at this ver...

Paydirt

I have to say Friday was the highlight of the week for me. I received two autographed cards in the mail from my favorite player as a child, and I finally tracked down some 2009 Topps. A week after I first saw these things on other blogs, I knew exactly what to look for when I stepped into Target this evening. From 60 feet away I could spot that baby blue background behind you-know-who's head (apparently the qualification for being featured on a pack of 2009 cards this year was not getting into the playoffs). I reached into the double-wide feeders and came up with air. But fortunately, there were '09 packs scattered all around the '08 boxes still there. All of them were probably manhandled, but I didn't mind. I grabbed six and brought them home to daddy. And after opening them, I have to say what I suspected: Topps is a clear winner over Upper Deck this year. I have a natural preference for Topps, so I am a little bit biased, but when I compare everything as obje...
