2010 Opening Day: Because I can

Yes, collectors, the long wait is over. Opening Day has returned to the card aisle. It's back and better ... uh, well ... the same as ever. In fact, I purchased a pack of 2010 Opening Day today. And I'm going to show the contents right here. Hello? Anybody still reading? Was it something I said? OK, for the very few of you left, you know the details. Opening Day is a cheaper version of the 2010 base set. It looks the same except for one or two minor details. In 2006, the foil was blue. In 2007, the borders were white. In 2008, the borders were crimson-blood-red-oh-my-god-they-sacrificed-a-goat-and-dried-its-life-source-on-cardboard!!!!!!!!!! After that bit of ugliness, Opening Day went on hiatus for 2009. The economy was the official reason. But we all know it was about the goat blood. Now it's back, and pretty blah, I must say. I wonder how Ryan Howard feels getting stuck on the Opening Day wrapper while Albert Pujols graces the main set. Anyway, let'...

Responsibility blows

Glenn Hubbard's facial expression sums up the day ahead for me. It's a day/night filled with Responsibility at my job. And I'm bracing for the grim tasks on the horizon. But I'm not going to get into it. I'll just say it involves talking to people who were put on this earth to haunt others, and doing things that I loathe. As an added bonus, the work day will be exceedingly long. And when I get home, I won't be satisfied with a job well done, because I will be too exhausted to think. So, there's no time for a proper post for the next 15 hours or so. But I do have a moment or two to avoid Responsibility. So here are some random cards and my thoughts on them: I don't have a lot of special cards that aren't Dodgers. But I have decided that when I come across the few that I do, I will offer them up in exchange for something that I am collecting. A black-bordered mini Granderson card from 2008 A&G may not be that exciting. But I know there are Grand...

Cards never say, "I'm sorry"

I am coming up on the one-year anniversary of two happenings that have developed into an everyday fact in my life. The first is becoming a dog owner. The second is the discovery of sports card blogs. You may not think dogs and cards have much in common. In fact, I've documented more than a couple of times that the two are pretty much mortal enemies. But the past week has emphasized how useful they are in my life. I experienced probably the most heartbreaking week on the job I have ever endured. I won't go into it here, because I don't feel like rehashing and I'm sure many readers don't care. But what helped me avoid coming home and plopping on the couch in a depressed lump was a dog that greets me ecstatically each day and an army of card bloggers to take my mind away. Oh yes, and there are new cards to take the edge off, too. It took the experiences of this past week to finally succumb to buying the blaster of Upper Deck Timeline that I have been staring at for mo...
