This is "so long," Heritage

I finally completed the 2025 Heritage set last week (the first 500 cards, no way I'm tackling high numbers sets anymore).

The Pete Crow-Armstrong card is finally mine. It took me a year after I landed the second-to-last card to find a PCA card price I could stomach. As I mentioned earlier, my timing wasn't good as the price of the card started soaring just when I was finishing the final few short-prints.

It still was too much to pay, but the prices on the card have come down about 10 dollars and I was sick of looking at his face in ebay listings for months. So I paid up.

The arrival of that card closed the book on a three-year run of complete Heritage sets in the night owl nest with 2023, 2024 and 2025 Heritage finished. Each of those sets are tributes to the first three sets I ever saw, 1974, 1975 and 1976 Topps -- those sets mean the world to me, so I wanted to get those Heritage sets done more than any other.

I had planned to keep going, at least through 2028 Heritage (1979 Topps) and probably 2029 Heritage (1980). But I decided to stop with 2025 for reasons related to the cost of SP's mostly. But in the time since I mentioned giving up, Heritage has come up with new reasons why I'm never going back.

Let's list them all, just in case I ever get the urge to resume:

x - The higher cost of the short-prints
x - Increasing the number of short-prints to 100 a few years back
x - Decreasing the set size from 500 to 400 this year
x - Even with the decrease in set size, the number of short-prints is still 100.
x - Keeping short-prints in the set even after Heritage was no longer paying tribute to sets issued in series.
x - Removing from the inserts the historical and pop-culture tributes to the time period
x - Scrapping the card-number-to-card-number tributes that once was a regular part of Heritage
x - Abandoning, for the most part, the photo style of the time period. This ended after the 2023 set.
x - Cramming rookies into the set when once Heritage was an oasis away from rookie overload
x - A ridiculous number of parallels, making it more difficult to complete the set.

That's 10 reasons, if I thought about it more I could come up with others.

Once, Heritage was what collectors collected instead of the flagship set to remember the way card sets were back in the '60s and '70s (heck, in the '80s, too). Now it has too many reminders of what cards are, and what the hobby is, today -- getting as much cash as you can, while you can.

So, that's it, for me. I'm saying so long with that one final card. From this point on, Heritage will be like every other set -- I'll find my Dodgers team set and call it a day.

Here are the last few short-print Dodgers from the 2026 Heritage set that also arrived the other day:

There were TEN short-printed Dodgers in this year's set, easily the most of any Heritage set, and, yeah, that's another reason. Though none of them came close to costing as much as the Crow-Armstrong card did, they were much more reasonable.

I will still buy samplings of Heritage over the next few years. Of course I want to open cards with the '78, '79 and '80 designs. You may even be able to convince me when Heritage hits the early '80s, too. We'll see how I'm feeling.

All told I completed four Heritage sets -- I got 2008 (1959) done a few years ago. That's a decent feat, each Heritage set was a challenge. It's a shame the set lost its appeal right during the mid-1970s years when cards were everything to me. And, yeah, I'm mad at Heritage for that, too.

But it was a good run and I feel I accomplished something. If Heritage ever wants to return to the way it was even just a couple of years ago, I might come back, but I doubt that's happening.

Some of this may be me growing away from modern cards even more. But in the "it's not you, it's me" department, I can safely say, it's definitely you, Heritage.

Very glad you completed this set; and it's such a shame it was this particular card that held things up. Definitely agree it's a Heritage/Topps/Fanatics thing and not a you or me thing. I don't think they really ever cared about the consumer, but it's more clear than ever that they don't. And cherry picking the few cards that you want seems the best way to proceed. Maybe a work stoppage next year will get rid of the kind of consumer they are after.
Before I read this post I was thinking that I might be largely done with Heritage myself, but I don't see it as me walking away from Heritage but rather Heritage walking away from me. These days there's a very small window for buying retail blasters and the like, and then this year I had very few opportunities to buy singles at shows or card shops. I'd say it's their loss but I suspect they won't miss me
Congrats on the completion. I'm thinking I'm done with all of the nonsense too. I'll grab a deal only on bulk cards in a set, but then not chase anything. Get what I get and live with it.

I, too, swore off Heritage moving forward after the debacle that was the super short print card from the 2009 set. In my eyes, Topps/Fanatics should have some sets that are geared toward set collectors: Topps flagship, Topps Heritage, and maybe A&G? Box prices shouldn't be above $125, and if that means cutting out a lot of the extra parallels, then do it. As you said, Heritage shouldn't have short prints anymore, but if they must, then there should never be more than 50 (more than 10% of a set being short printed is awful for set collectors).

The main counterargument to all of this is that Topps can say they tried to make a set for kids and set collectors (Big League, and before that, Opening Day) and neither of those brands lasted particularly long.

Maybe set collectors are the dinosaurs that need to be phased out.
Completely agree. Congrats on getting your sets completed.

My youngest and I hit our LCS on Saturday. The hobby box prices are ridiculous. Boxes for $1000-$1500. A Star Wars box for $650.

We sat there for 2 hours and hit the dime boxes and walked away with 330 cards for $10…and opened 3 1991 Fleer Ultra for $1 a pack.

We did look through and entire monster box of Allen and Ginter and finished the Cubs, Royals, and Tigers team sets. It’s obviously people just by those hobby boxes and toss the commons. We got 2 PCAs from there in our 330 count box!

It does not appear they short printed any cards in this year Allen Ginter........could there be a change coming - We'll see with Heritage update.....probably not......if they short print all of the Top rookies, Ugh

Glad you got the set completed. Interesting how those who collect cards for nostalgia are confronted with the interworkings of a market with money making motives, It is easy to understand short prints in vintage sets created by production logistics and decreasing demand as the baseball season wound down. Short prints in modern sets, at least for me, are much more difficult to understand.

Congrats on finishing the set. It's a shame Fanatics doesn't realized they're driving away business with decisions like these.

I think I've started more Heritage sets from bulk lots rather than buying boxes, and I like it better that way. It's a hell of a lot cheaper. 2008 hobby boxes were still affordable, 2020s were retail boxes, and 2024 was the biggest exception because we wanted the case break experience.
Of course, for me, the biggest turn off is there are no retired players except for a few inserts. And I REALLY don't know these current guys now.
Let's see if the new Archives football is any better....at least I've heard of most of them....

Congrats on finishing the set. I'm 2 cards away from completing a 2019 Heritage set for cards 1 - 725. I'm not doing any of the parallels or cards that have multiples using different views or nicknames. I'm down to 394b Tucker and 430 Ohtani. I'm not quite sure how I will land them. I'm also doing a select few inserts sets, but I don't think they will be quite as tough. Great job. Enjoy it all!

Congrats on finishing your set. It's a shame Toppsnatics has taken the fun out of the hobby for most of us. They're doing it for the rippers these days. I'll probably do a blaster of each year for the next few years, but that's it. Anyway, there seems to be a two-week window where I can purchase Heritage because it seems once it's gone, it's gone.

Your forebearance is admirable. I was too much of a spaz and I got fed up with Heritage in 2012 because of all the short prints. That it has only gotten worse convinces me that I made the right decision. It seems it is all a money grab now in the Fanatics era.
