No goals, no resolutions, but one promise

While looking for cards for another post, I was reminded again about my long-promised vow to conduct a "100 Greatest Cards of the '80s" countdown, similar to my "100 Greatest Cards of the '70s" countdown from 2017.

I've been pledging to do that '80s countdown for two years now. A couple times I even set a date for when it would happen ... and then never carried it out.

This is why I don't announce goals or make resolutions at New Years, especially when it comes to cards. I can't let deadlines and such into my hobby. Because I don't want to be that serious about collecting and I'll always break them anyway.

You never know what's going to happen in your life, too.

I fully intended to have an '80s countdown completed by now. But neither 2018 nor 2019 would let me do the work that I need to for a proper review. Dealing with my parents' illnesses and passings and also writing features for Beckett cut into my extra free time.

But still, I really want that countdown to happen.

So I'm making one last promise.

I have already kicked off some of the research for the best cards of the 1980s. I expect that to continue over the coming months. I don't know what the future holds but if life travels at an average pace, I will have the countdown ready to go on September 1st.

Take that for what you will. I understand if you'll only believe it when you see it.

I plan to write monthly updates on how preparations are going to show that I'm serious about this project this time.

So expect the first update some time in February. Maybe I'll even attach a small giveaway to each update to keep people interested.

(RIP, Neil Peart)

Don't feel too bad -- I promised to do a 100 Greatest Vintage Cards countdown on my blog...five years ago. Still have yet to hold up my side of the bargain on that one. (Hopefully one day.)

If it makes you feel any better, the fact that it's now 2020 means that it's been 30 years since the 80's ended.

No worries, I'm pretty sure we all know how real life can affect our schedule. More than a few of us are behind on various hobby activities. Nevertheless, I for one am looking forward to the '80s countdown.

Completely understand your stand on goals and resolutions. Totally looking forward to seeing this countdown... even if it's two, five, or ten years down the road.

P.S. Heard the news about Neil Peart earlier today and was totally bummed out.

UNACCEPTABLE!

Just kidding, of course. A top-100 cards project takes time, especially when the decade involved is the 1980s. You've got Donruss, Fleer, Score, and a whole bunch of other oddballs, update sets, and boxed sets to consider in addition to the standard Topps set.
