Player collecting question

You know, I thought by being on vacation I would have more time for some thoughtful posts. But it's not happening that way. I seem to have less time than normal, and it's going to get worse as the week progresses.

So, apologies in advance.

Here is all I've got for you this morning:

See the card above? It's a Topps Series 2 item of the injured Rod Barajas.

I just noticed today that Clayton Kershaw is sharing space with Barajas on the card.

You may have heard I collect Clayton Kershaw cards.

So, um, is this a Clayton Kershaw card? I mean in terms of it being listed in the Clayton Kershaw library and included in a Clayton Kershaw binder, if I had one?

(I still consider a binder devoted to one player as stalkerish. I know. That's my issue. But I'm a collecting child of the '70s, and it will always seem a little weird to me).

So that's my question.

Simple question. Simple post.

Now, back to doing things I don't want to on MY VACATION.

(Where is that damn box of Allen & Ginter?)

I'm gonna go with "no" on that one. When I see one of my dudes on another guy's card, I'm like "oh, cool", but I don't let the dude in question Bogart that card.

if for any reason than to NOT put a card of Rod Barajas in a binder...

Put it aside and who knows, you might stumble upon a few more cards where Kershaw makes a cameo appearance.

I don't consider it to be. I've seen a couple cards with Piazza in the background, but have never felt the need to hang on to them.

I say nay. I did list all my McGriff lurker cards when I was collecting him hardcore, if only to point out the lurking-ness to others. But I never counted them as part of my grand total.
I also say no. He's in the background and not the focus of the card. Still cool though.

No way. There's no references for photos, so the only way to discover any more like this would be to scrutinize every card you have or ever come across. Too much work.

No. I used to consider them player cards back in the late 80s and early 90s but not anymore. Since there are so many different sets now there is no reason to add extra cards that you have to chase.

I also vote no. If you collected a middle infielder you'd (like I do) this wouldn't even be a question! Larkin makes cameo appearances on what seems like hundreds of mid-90s cards!

I will go w/ Yes but put it in the back of the binder w/ the league leader cards.

why not? - I think it is pretty cool and it may give you insight into what game the photos were taken in for other cards and other nonsense.

I say maybe. If your Kershaw collection is fairly large and its becoming difficult to find new cards you don't own, then it would be interesting to add a unique card like that into the collection. If not, then you might want to focus on "real" Kershaw cards. My fiancee bought me a Nolan Ryan card that had Gaylord Perry's name listed on the front (my favorite player). At first I didn't consider the to be in my collection but over time, it became an interesting piece of my Perry collection.

Going with no as well. I had that come up a couple of times when I see a Teixeira or Brodeur, but if their name isn't anywhere on the card, I dont consider it to be one of theirs.
I'll say no. And yes.

No, I don't actively seek these cards out. I don't consider them a part of a PC. However, and here comes the yes part, I would keep the card. Stick it in the back of the binder with the oddball stuff. I have a Lee Stevens Stadium Club chrome card from his time with the Rangers. He is covering first base and Will Clark is crossing the bag as an Oriole. It's kooky and I have a copy for my Rangers collection and a copy for my Clark PC.

If his name is not on the card then it's not a Kershaw card. I remember back in '86 when Eric Davis was hot, there was a card (Gary Redus perhaps) with Davis in the background and it was actually selling at a premium. I never got that.

I will go with a Yes*. Back when I was building my George Brett binder I ran across a Howie Long football card from Upper Deck. Howie was sitting on the sidelines talking to Brett. It went right alongside the other cards from that year. However, I must place an asterisk beside that Yes since I agree with most of the No responses also. Individual preference rules.

I'd say no to this card, but not no across the board. I've got one Hideo Nomo card in my Piazza collection because of how the card is composed. I can't describe it off of the top of my head, but when I come across it while scanning all of my Piazzas, I'll give you a heads up. (You probably already have it and may know the card I'm speaking of. It's from Pinnacle.)

I will also say no. I've seen enough cards with some guy driving past Jeff Hornacek, but I don't keep 'em for my Jeff Hornacek collection.

That's what I get for collecting slow, white guys...
