Cardboard appreciation: 1975 Topps Rudy May

(I'm tired, it's late. This is Cardboard Appreciation. The 53rd in a series):

Everyone knows this card, right? It's an airbrushed masterpiece. And by masterpiece, I mean something so ineptly awful that it is worthy of a standing ovation. There have been many odes to this card. There's not much more I can add.

But in an attempt to properly measure just how horribly wonderful the '75 Rudy May card is, here are some other "so-bad-it's-good moments" in other walks of life:

  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of film: "Plan 9 From Outer Space."
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of music videos: Anything by the Spice Girls
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of food: Either bacon or Captain Crunch with Crunch Berries.
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of restaurants: "Hot Dog on a Stick." (purely for comic value)
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of fashion: 1970's jumpsuits (see above).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of music: The Final Countdown," by Europe (there has to be a reason why it's still played at high school sporting events).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of press conferences: Allen Iverson "Talkin' 'Bout Practice." (Not a game. Not a game. Not a game. We Talkin' 'Bout Practice).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of Winter Olympic sports: Curling
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of vehicles: The Chevy Chevette. (My wife had one. She was the good part. The car was bad. Very bad. Almost evil).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of children's television show theme songs: "Max and Ruby." (If you have little ones, you know what I'm talking about. There are literally three words in the whole song. It's so brain-numbingly simple you find yourself laughing, or worse, reciting it).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of children's TV shows of my era: "Land of the Lost." (Crazy good with beer. Or so I'm told).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of dog breeds: The beagle. (If he wasn't so damn obedient, he'd chew your head off).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of actresses: Megan Fox. (She can't act, but I don't think anyone cares).
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of sports leagues: The XFL.
  • The 1975 Topps Rudy May of blog posts: Aw, hell, let's go with this one.

So, there you are. Just like the person who airbrushed Rudy May into a Yankee cap, the intent was there. Maybe. The execution was not there. Definitely. The result was painful. Positively. Yet something about it is oh, so good.

That is truly amazing....some Topps photo editor must have been watching Land of the Lost and drinking lots of that beer when he gave that one the OK.

That Iverson "Practic" audio...classic.
