The most Hall of Famers, update 7

The Dodgers are cleaning up, on the field and off, and I'm posting about yesterday's news. That's how I roll. I think you know by now.

I had planned to run an updated "Most Hall of Famers" post once the 2017 class was announced during the winter. But I promptly forgot about it until the Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place yesterday.

The last dozen or so years I have watched the induction ceremony religiously. But yesterday I missed most of it. I think it's because most of the players that I grew up with, who are eligible for voting, have been inducted already. The classes are now starting to move completely into '90s ballplayers, which doesn't interest me nearly as much.

The lone exception yesterday, of course, was Tim Raines. I was a teenager when Raines reached the major leagues. I followed his career through the '80s. He was part of the stolen base generation of the '60s, '70s and '80s.

So, in honor of Raines' induction, I decided to update the list of the Hall of Famers in each Topps flagship set to include the 1982 and 2000 sets. Those are the first and last sets where you can find a Raines flagship card.

As bit of a recap, I am looking for Hall of Fame players in the set who were active when the set was issued. For instance, there is a card of Hall of Famer Hank Aaron in the 2000 Topps base set. I'm not counting that in the list.

And, obviously, I'm not counting the multiple cards of Hall of Famers in 1982 Topps, which featured both In Action cards and All-Star cards of multiple Hall of Famers (as well as record-breaker cards).

Here we go. Here is the seventh update for the most Hall of Famers:

The 1992 and 1996 sets get a big boost from Raines, Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez all appearing. Raines also adds to the totals for the 1982, 1987 and 1990 sets.

With the addition of the 1982 set, you can see the vast difference in Hall of Famers between 1982 and 1983. That's for two reasons: 1. Managers were added to the 1983 set. 2. The '83 set is known for featuring rookie cards of future Hall of Famers Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn and Ryne Sandberg.

1969 remains in front with 47 Hall of Famers. (As always, I may have missed somebody so if you spot an omission, let me know).

OK, that's yesterday's news.

As for today's news?

Go Dodgers.

The numbers still amaze me. To think that when I was watching baseball in 1990 there were 34 Hall of Famers roaming around seems way too high. I would have assumed about five per year tops.

Do you think any sets will catch the 69 and 72 sets

I'd like to see how some of the other early '70s sets shake out ('71 and '73). In time, probably a few years from now, I wouldn't be surprised if 1983 beats them all.

Congrats on the buzzer beater for Yu Darvish! Here's hoping Roberts doesn't abuse his arm too much because I have a feeling the Cubs will be making a run at him in the offseason :)

It was a great trade by the Dodgers. The best prospect they gave up was likely not to have a future in LA anyway.

When looked at in this light, it feels like the HOF isn't exclusive enough. I'm with Section 36; an average of one to two per team is a lot and loses its specialness.

Glad to see 1972 is still King. On the flipside, I was bummed that Sonny went to the Yankees. Was really hoping he'd join Rich Hill in LA.
I'm confused about why the 1967 set is not listed. 39 of the 42 names you list for 1968 also had cards in the 1967 set, which puts that set ahead of some others on the list.

Nice to see the often-maligned '68 and '69 sets here!

There are a lot of sets not listed, I haven't gotten to those yet. I'm randomly updating.

You're missing one from that beautiful 1956 set -George Kell.
