It's 2:45 a.m. and I am eating leftover Taco Bell. This is something I almost never do anymore and, normally, it would be a very bad, bad thing. But tonight I don't care.
That's because I'm celebrating. Tonight is the fourth anniversary of Night Owl Cards. Four years ago this night, at 3:34 in the morning, I posted the first words in this blog. And now, tonight, I am posting The Duke, the greatest No. 4 in history, to recognize that I am still churning out posts four years -- and more than 1,400 days -- later.
That means it's on to Year No. 5. And I'm a little tentative about the future.
The other card blogs I've known to hit this mark kind of have a checkered history. Some have up and quit. Some have barely posted. Some have converted their blog into something very different from a baseball card blog. Some have gotten jaded or bored or distracted. And a lot of this happens around Year 5, if not earlier.
I don't want that to happen. I want this to always be a little baseball card blog with ramblings and rants and excitements about cards. I hope I can keep it that way. But that's all I have. Hope.
The past year has been a rocky one -- not on the blog, but personally. And the message that I have received loud and clear this last year is:
1. You're not as smart as you think you are
2. Nothing is guaranteed. No matter what.
So with those two ideas in my head, how can I make assurances about what direction this blog will go? All I can do is give you my word, and hope you have faith in it. I mean what else can you do? If one day you click on this blog and it's suddenly an ode to macrame, then you'll know -- I had no idea what I was talking about back on Sept. 13, 2012.
But until that time, I plan on giving you one hell of a good time.
Nothing but ...
...
...
FAST CARS ...
FAST WOMEN ...
FAST BALLS ...
FAST BREAKS ...
FAST FOOD ...
...
Oh, OK, so the blog won't be much about that at all.
How about some ...
FAST CARDS
Yeah, that's more like it.
I hope you've been entertained in the last year. And over the last four years. I really enjoy it when someone drops me an email telling me how much time they waste at work reading my blog. That's a proud moment for me.
So, thanks for reading. And thanks for collecting and trading. Most of all, thanks for enjoying baseball cards.
Year five is here.
Damn, I better think of something to post.

You do a great job for all we collectors.
I look forward to many more years of reading your blog...
For my Vintage Sportscards Blog, I'm going to keep it going for as long as my muse tells me to do it. Will the end come next week? Next month? Next Year? It all depends on when I feel there's nothing else to say.
But I will say this much. If you keep posting, I'll keep reading. Happy 4th.
I must have missed something. I've read the post 10 times now, and all I saw was fast women.
What's this 4 years business? Oh well, I'll just have to read those women again. I mean, the post again...women.
:D
4 MORE YEARS!
(congratulations!)
And thanks, too, for giving me something of value on which to waste time at work.
