Unlike the last couple of Father's Days, I'm posting on the actual day today. I took the last couple days off to refresh, so now I'm ready to go with just a small pack break.
Like last year, for Father's Day I received a hanger box of Heritage and a gift card (which shall go toward cards. Unlike last year, I'm not trying to complete the Heritage set, so the stakes are not high, which is key for this day. Absolutely no stakes on Father's Day. No stakes, only steaks!
Let's see what kind of box my daughter picked out this time around, just the highlights (and lowlights):
I do like the Record Breaker cards in this set. Yes, "XBHS" takes me out of 1977 but the overall vibe of the card reminds me of pulling the Minnie Minoso and Jose Morales Record Breakers back in '77.
The guy who tried to smite the Dodgers in last year's World Series. I haven't heard a whole lot about him this year -- admittedly I'm not paying too much attention to the AL East especially with the Yankees winning and all.
Of course, a whole bunch of half-bodies. This still bothers me, but since it first jumped out at me I've been going back to the 1977 set and I was reminded that, yes, this kind of cropping was a thing in '77 ...
But 1977 mixed it up a lot more with close-up shots or full-body pitching or fielding poses or distant action shots or ...
Mike Cuellar looking longingly at the batting cage. You know, a little more variety, less lazy, not every last thing cropped at the mid-section -- even Heritage's action shots are cropped that way.
Anyway, back to the Heritage box.
With 100 less cards in the set this year but the same amount of short-prints, it's a given that you'll start pulling dupes without even one-forth of the set complete. Here they are. The Roman Anthony card came in damaged, too.
But let's turn to the more pleasant stuff.
I was happy to see a couple of All-Stars that I needed. We're ignoring the "TM".
And this was nice to see. All the rookie quartet cards are short-printed and there are four Dodgers to get with these. I've managed to land three of the four already, Just need the Justin Dean card.
Also, the chrome card in the box was a Dodger, too. The daughter can pick 'em!
So there's your excitement for Father's Day. I'm not sure yet what cards I'll purchase with the gift card (I will definitely find something, no way I'm using that gift card for lawn tools or socks).
Going to hear from my offspring later today so that'll be even better than pulling a needed Dodger from a box of cards!
