As of this week, the final envelope from the 5,000-post, 5,000-card giveaway reached its destination.
I'm done sending out those 250-card random repacks and done paying the postage.
Best of all, I can actually use the card table for writing and sorting again, something that was impossible with 5,000 cards sitting on it.
Giving away 5,000 cards from my collection helped clear out a ton of cards that didn't have any place in my collection and that I was holding onto unnecessarily. I am now free of a whole lot of card clutter (although there are some leftovers from the giveaway that will return to my collection).
My fear with this giveaway is that I would deplete my trade bait down to nothing, and it's true, I don't have a heck of a lot of it right now. But it won't take long to build that back up. I give it a month.
I still have one small giveaway-related package to send -- to Chris of The Collector -- just kind of a thank you for inspiring a little bit of levity during the whole chaos of the giveaway. That'll go out next week.
Chris also recently sent me an envelope of a few cards. I can tell he really tried to find something I needed, which isn't easy sometimes.
One of the cards was the random Sabres card at the top of the post, one of the many goalies Buffalo has used since the Ryan Miller era.
OK, I might have this card. Bowman prospects who never made it out of Class A drop into The Black Hole of The Forgotten and who knows if I actually have this card in my binders? I'll have to look.
(*Turns over card*)
Woo! REFRACTOR! Of someone who still didn't make it out of Class A! I NEEEEEEEDED it!
Two needs from when Optic was doing its 1990 Donruss riff in 2017. I guess it's good that Panini got it in when it did as when the '90 Donruss design comes up in Panini Donruss rotation in a couple of years, Panini won't be creating baseball cards anymore (Did that make sense? It seemed convoluted when I was writing it).
Two more Justin Turners to add to the growing collection. Turner is moving in on the Top 40 in terms of Dodgers who have the most cards in my collection. He passes Brad Penny for 45th place with these two.
It was quite amusing to watch Turner's fly ball fall behind the Giants' Luis Rodriguez and score two runs last night. The amusement ended thanks to the Dodgers' bullpen (if the bullpen is going to act like that, Dave Roberts, maybe don't take out the pitcher who just gave up his FIRST HIT OF THE GAME). But it all finished well thanks to Mookie.
Finally, here is a need for my 1985 Fleer set. I am not doing well making this set a priority. If vintage prices ever come down, I may never complete it.
Although I really enjoyed giving cards away, it feels good to have no attachments right now and to just be able to send out cards to folks as I please again.
I'm glad the giveaway was well-received and that people found some cards they could use. That's all I wanted to see.
