The most hall of famers, update 8

When Alan Trammell was selected for the Hall of Fame last December, it solidified this card as one of a kind.

This card is the first and only multi-player rookie prospects card to feature more than one Hall of Famer. Trammell joins Paul Molitor in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown on Sunday and is also immortalized in collecting history.

There is also another member of this year's Hall induction class that appeared on a rookie prospects card in the 1978 Topps set. He happens to have been a teammate of Trammell's.

Jack Morris will be making an induction speech Sunday afternoon, too.

Both Trammell and Morris are part of a massive Hall of Fame class this year, with Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Chipper Jones and Jim Thome also being inducted today. I won't be able to watch the ceremonies tomorrow and I'm kind of glad about it, because that's a lot of speeches to sit through.

Also, like I mentioned last year, the 1990s guys don't interest me much. Like Tim Raines last year, I'm there for Trammell and Morris, guys from when I was growing up watching baseball. As for the rest? My favorite memory of Trevor Hoffman is his contribution to this.

But there must be a record of all the Hall of Famers and their impact on Topps baseball card sets. I have been occasionally posting updates as I try to find out the Topps flagship set with the most Hall of Famers. Periodically, I add a few more sets to the group and then update the sets I've already compiled with the new Hall of Famers.

That's what I'll do now. In honor of Trammell and Morris, I'm going to add 1978 to the pile. I'm also going to add 1993 Topps, which is the set that featured five of the new Hall of Famers -- Trammell, Morris, Hoffman, Jones and Thome -- for the first time. (Guerrero didn't show up until 1996).

As always, I am counting only cards of Hall of Famers from when they were active in the majors (for managers, that's active managing only, not playing).

The '90s foursome of Jones, Guerrero, Hoffman and Thome added a little punch to the previously meager totals for 1996 and 2000.

But the big news is that with the addition with Alan Trammell and Jack Morris, the 1983 Topps set has now tied the 1969 set as the one with the most Hall of Famers with 47 apiece. Obviously, there are many sets still to tabulate, but I've always suspected 1983 Topps to be one of the most Hall of Fame heavy.

Both 1978 and 1993 made out pretty well with Hall of Famers. Each set featured managers, which is a good way to boost totals.

As always, if I missed anyone, please point it out to me. This is a tedious exercise and my mind sometimes tends to wander while doing it. It's always possible I skipped someone.

I'd like to compile 1971 and 1973 Topps next just to see how close they get to 1969 (I have my doubts). But I haven't done very well with writing more than one of these posts a year, so we'll see.

Congrats to all the new Hall of Famers. Even that Padres guy.

Still trolling us with that Dawson in a Marlins uniform...

Eddie Murray baseball cards vs. Andre Dawson baseball cards in a “Most Bad Ass Baseball Card” contest. Now that would be a throwdown.

Please add Sparky Anderson to your 1978 total.

Interesting post. Multiple player rookie cards - one of the worst concepts ever.

Trevor Hoffman is the last Padre player to be inducted for a long time

I love stuff like this. Thanks as always for doing the dirty work. I had the '58 and '59 sets tallied up at some point but I can't seem to find my spreadsheet.
