Have you heard, or noticed, that the American League as of this writing has just two winning teams?
I'm sure interleague play is to blame for that and it will straighten itself out during the season but it might be time to break out the old "junior circuit" label for the moment. That's a very National League thing for me to do.
Also, since I last did this, two Braves, a Cardinal and a Phillie have won the NL MVP, so here are the updated NL MVP team standings:
Cardinals 18, Dodgers 14, Giants 13, Reds 12, Cubs 9, Phillies 9, Braves 8, Pirates 7, Brewers 2 (NL Brewers, we'll get to AL Brewers), Astros 1 (NL Astros), Marlins 1, Nationals 1, Padres 1, Rockies 1
This is all since 1931, which is when the modern day MVP award came to be.
Now let's update the American League:
Yankees - 22, Athletics - 11, Red Sox - 11, Tigers - 11, Angels - 7, Orioles - 5, Rangers - 5, Twins - 5, White Sox - 5, Brewers (AL) - 3, Blue Jays - 2, Indians - 2, Mariners - 2, Astros (AL) - 1, Royals 1
Yankees still have far away the most, thanks to many multiple winners. The Rays are the only American League team that hasn't won an MVP award.
Now let's see the AL Cy Young and Rookie of the Year standings by team.
Cy Young Award
Red Sox - 7, Tigers - 7, Orioles - 6, Yankees - 6, Athletics - 5, Indians - 5, Blue Jays - 4, Royals - 4, Twins - 4, White Sox - 3, Astros (AL) - 2, Brewers (AL) - 2, Mariners - 2, Rays - 2, Angels - 1
Red Sox and Tigers tied with seven. The Tigers caught up to the Red Sox with Tarik Skubal's back-to-back awards. The Rangers have never won a Cy Young Award.
Yankees - 10, Athletics - 9, Orioles - 8, Red Sox - 6, White Sox - 6, Mariners - 5, Tigers - 5, Twins - 5, Indians - 4, Rays - 4, Royals - 4, Angels - 3, Astros (AL) - 2, Blue Jays - 2, Rangers - 2, Senators - 2, Braves (AL) - 1, Browns - 1, Brewers (AL) - 1
Yankees, A's and Orioles represent the last three Rookie of the Year winners. All of the American League teams can lay claim to a Rookie of the Year in their history.
OK, that's it for the AL, but I'm still not quite finished with the NL. I need to update the National League Cy Young and Rookie of the Year lists for them, too.
For the Cy Young, the Reds, Brewers, Marlins, Padres, Braves and Pirates have featured a Cy Young pitcher, so here are the updated totals:
Dodgers - 11, Braves - 8, Mets - 7, Phillies - 6, Cubs - 5, Diamondbacks - 5, Padres - 5, Cardinals - 3, Giants - 3, Pirates - 3, Astros (NL) - 2, Nationals - 2, Pirates - 2, Brewers (NL) -1, Expos 1, Marlins -1, Reds -1
The Marlins, Reds (and the National League Brewers) were all first-time NL Cy Young winners in the last six years. The Rockies still have not won a Cy Young Award.
Now for the NL Rookie of the Year:
Dodgers - 18, Braves - 11, Reds - 8, Cardinals - 6, Giants - 6, Mets - 6, Cubs - 5,
Marlins - 4, Phillies - 4, Brewers (NL) - 2, Pirates - 2, Expos - 2, Padres - 2, Astros - 1,, Nationals - 1, Diamondbacks - 1, Rockies - 1
The Braves (two players), Brewers, Diamondbacks, Reds and Pirates all added to their totals since 2019. The Diamondbacks were the last NL team to gain a Rookie of the Year.
Sorry for the disjointed nature of this post. I realized at the last minute that I had previously done National League and American League posts seven years ago instead of just National League and I had to scramble in the time available to salvage the post.
So there's the update. I don't know if I'll ever do another one. Who knows if there will still be AL and NL in another seven years.
Anyway, I know all of this information is readily available elsewhere -- even in the AI internet age -- but I like to compile it in my own way and I learn something while I'm doing it, too.
