Coke and a smile

The last two cards that I needed to complete the 1981 Coke sets (this will be disputed by a certain noted collector) arrived in the mail today. Although I've always loved those Coke issues from around this time, I didn't go all-in on them until this year, when other oddball issues from my favorite time period increased in price and availability. In the spring, I did a lot of damage to the Coke sets, but eased off over the following months. I resumed the chase a few weeks ago. Finally, about a week ago, the last two player cards showed up in the mail. This is the charm of the sets. Although there is a Nolan Ryan and Pete Rose and George Brett, they aren't necessarily more difficult to obtain than the other cards. That's because mojo hunters -- who only collect stars and rookies -- aren't interested in these much, and isn't it wonderful? It's so nice that something from my childhood hasn't been run roughshod by "investors" and the like.   Still,...

My favorite DIY set

I found my 2022 Topps Mookie Betts card today. I opened up the binder to file the Series 2 flagship cards that I received recently and -- hello -- there was the Betts card staring back at me. I apparently misfiled it out of order and that's why I didn't pull it for yesterday's post. So, with that disaster out of the way, I can move on to happier things, such as the nice stack of '70s Hostess that Bob of the best bubble sent me! This is the kind of boost I need as I've stalled a little bit on Hostess additions. That's a host (ha!) of Hostess additions from the 1975 set. Love it. I know I've said I'd like to chase the '77 Hostess set after finishing off the '76 set last year, but the '75 set has such a classic look and I'm even happier when I view it. So it looks like I'll be picking up both at the same time as I can!   Here are some of the '77s that Bob sent, all needs. That George Hendrick is a well-known Hostess classic with ...

The best Dodger card for every year I've collected, 2022 update

This is a bit embarrassing, but as I was getting prepared to write this post about having completed the 2022 Topps flagship team set for the Dodgers, I discovered I haven't completed it. Somehow, I'm missing the Mookie Betts card. It's been checked off on TCDB. It's been erased from my blog want list. But it isn't physically here. That probably means I did something stupid like traded it or gave it away when I thought I had an extra. So, yeah, I need a 2022 flagship Mookie card. Anybody have an extra? (EDIT, 2:49 PM Sept. 28: Found it! Misfiled in my binder). There's no going back on the post though. This was supposed to be a quick-and-easy one because I have no time and now that's blown up in my face. So, with the Opening Day Betts as a substitute, here are the flagship Dodgers: The team set is just 22 cards this year, after 31 last year. Even taking away the extra four World Series cards from last year, 2022 is still on the small side. Now, let's tak...
