This card showed up in a package from Sportscards From The Dollar Store on Oct. 24, I think. I'm not positive on that date, but I know it was close to the weekend and it wasn't last weekend.
The date is important to me because of the date on this card. It's the first time I owned a card that notes a famous moment that occurred on my birthday. And it took receiving this card to realize that Apollo 11 -- well-known for the first moon landing -- rocketed into space on my fourth birthday! Mark it on the calendar!
I've always known that the moon landing was on July 20th, close to my birthday but I never tracked back to the blast-off date. So that's a pretty cool card to have. It's from a five-card set commemorating the 25th anniversary of Apollo 11, issued by Citgo gas stations in 1994.
Thanks to buckstorecards I've accumulated several cards of athletes who share my birthday but never an event that shares my birthday. I've finally dedicated a couple of 9-pocket pages to those 7-16ers and Douglas sent a couple more.
Carli Lloyd is one of the more well-known 7-16ers and I was glad to have this card as the other card I own of hers is tied up in a complete set. Giorgio Tavecchio kicked briefly for the Raiders and Falcons in 2017-18 and I had never heard of him until getting this card.
Most of the other cards in the envelope were more traditional team interests, though Douglas rarely sends traditional-type cards, especially when it comes to baseball.
For example, here's a relic card of six-game Dodger Zach Reks while he was with Triple A Oklahoma City. I guess OKC had a day when they renamed themselves the "Blue Sky" and wore Spanish-themed uniforms? Lots of guessing on that. But it's from 2020 Topps Pro Debut.
More Dodgers prospects, this time of the autograph kind. These are very busy Panini cards. Vetrano is still in the Dodgers organization, played for OKC this past year. Lockhart is in the Tigers organization.
OK, not ever a Dodger, but how can I resist an owl patch?? Bryan Price pitched briefly for the Cleveland Indians in 2014. He played college ball for the Rice Owls and Donruss Elite asked some college guys to provide their autograph and made mascot patches. Go nuts, Elite.
Nice, legit Dodgers needs here, though not your typical Topps flagship, eh? I still don't have a handle on what Panini was going for with Americs's Pastime baseball and the orange borders in 2013, but with the base cards all numbered to /125 it's not like I have a chance to get familiar with them.
Since Doug hails from Canada, naturally Sabres cards fill the envelope. This is a colorful selection. Poor Derek Plante is miscut, on the dullest card in this lot, too. Also, the Dake Hawerchuk card is so thick that it casts a shadow on the card next to it. I don't know who wants a Dale Hawerchuk card that they can't fit into a binder page but here we are.
More fancy Sabres cards. I still think of Jeff Skinner as a Sabre though he hasn't played for them in a couple years. Zack Kassian played exactly one year for Buffalo. One! Out of 12 years.
This is more my speed. A Buffalo great on an all-time great card-look from a great card brand. This gains admittance into the Sabres binder without even thinking about it.
Finally, I always receive Bills from Sportscards From The Dollar Store because we each share a fondness for the team. Although none of these guys play for the Bills (meaning it's tough to get them in the Bills binder), I consider it good mojo for the next game on the schedule.
The game is on Monday night so I won't get to see it. I'll sit at my desk sending gentle Gabe Davis vibes (remember when the Bills used to throw long-range touchdown passes?).
All right, that was an envelope full of exotic stuff.
Love it. I'm marking it down.
